FAMILY WEEKEND AT THE U

What a weekend we have upon us! It’s Family Weekend at the UofA with its activities, football, UofA Mall activities, Film Fests, Football game versus Washington, and more! Bear Down Friday tonight at Main Gate Square of course. The U will be bustling with activity all weekend.

TUCSON MEET YOURSELF

Where do you begin    to describe the diversity of Tucson Meet Yourself? Music and performances from all corners of the globe including the Philippines, Ireland, Mexico, Russia, Africa, Japan, Scotland, Brazil, Vietnam, and the Americas. Food and folk art similarly from everywhere.  Experience different cultures first hand. Now in its 46th year, this festival affords an opportunity to grow culturally. No cost for admission!  

FESTIVALS GALORE!

Amidst the University activities and Tucson Meet Yourself, we also have Pumpkin festivals, Farmers Markets, 2nd Saturdays Downtown, 2nd Sundaze at TMoA and Oktoberfest on Mt. Lemmon too.     

TOHONO CHUL FALL PLANT SALE

The Fall Plant Sale at Tohono Chul Gardens starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday. With 1000 different species, everyone can find something that would enhance their desert garden.

TUCSON MODERNISM WEEK

Tucson Modernism Week finishes with tours, cocktail parties, and lectures.

Round out the weekend with Paul Anka singing Sinatra at Desert Diamond on Saturday night, or at the Fox which presents Rufus Wainwright Sunday night.

Happy Friday everyone! Temperatures are high, humidity is high, chance of monsoon is low. We were spoiled by a lovely spring in the desert but now we're paying the price, aren't we? Let's all assume our fall-back position of taking it easy during the daylight hours, staying hydrated, and enjoying our pools.

If you're on the east side of town this Saturday or Sunday stop by our Open House at 702 S Pantano to say hi and to cool off. As always, please let us know if we can be of help to you or someone you know.

 SOUTHWESTERN WINGS

No, not the ones you make on your grill! It's the annual Southwestern    Wings Birding and Nature Festival. Some field trips may still have openings and all of the lectures are free to attend.

KXCI'S ANNUAL BLUES REVIEW

The best little radio station in Tucson presents it's annual Blues Review at El Casino Ballroom tonight! Join in the fun. If you can't get there, it's also streamed live.

SACCA WORLD MARGARITA CHAMPIONSHIP

Forward drinkers? No, forward thinkers! If you purchased your tickets to the World Margarita Championship a few weeks ago, have a fun time tonight and enjoy the special food and margarita recipes.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE JAZZ AT MAIN GATE

Tonight it's Little House of Funk, live at the main gate square stage. Free parking and plenty of food and beverage spots to check out before the show starts at 7:30 PM.

SATURDAY IN TUCSON

Can't find anything to do tomorrow? Tour the gardens on the old San Agustin Mission between 8 AM and noon. Have a great lunch at one of downtown's restaurants then head to Hamilton Distillery by 3 PM to tour and sample whiskeys. By 5 PM you're ready for your nap!

PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS!

Okay, we're not there yet but the first pre-season game of the 2019 NFL season is now in the books. Your favorite team is playing this coming week. See the NFL Preseason Schedule here!

Just a gentle reminder that while its 100 degrees here in Tucson, it's currently 72 degrees on Mt. Lemmon. Need I say more? Hiking, biking, picnicking, The Sky Ride, restaurants, and wonderful weather awaits you at 9,159 feet!

Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend.

Fri 6/15 - Sun 6/17

The most authentic Mexican food north of the border is why Tucson was the first American city to receive the title of UNESCO World City of Gastronomy! Celebrate Tucson 23 starting this Father’s Day weekend.  Brew at the Zoo is tomorrow night and takes place rain or shine.  That’s quite a nice threat to hear for all of us in Tucson, isn’t it?  If you missed the free birthday cake and ice cream yesterday for Ted DeGrazia’s 106th birthday you can still enjoy the gifts he left us by visiting his gallery this weekend and seeing some of the 15,000 original paintings sketches, sculptures and such, that he produced to capture the people, culture, and events of the Southwest.

Cooler temperatures are a bonus for the Dash for Dad tomorrow starting at 6:30am.  And it’s also nice that Dads get in for free this weekend at Old Tucson Studios.  Check out the car show this weekend.  See more classic cars, and probably some classic Dads at Little Anthony’s Classic Car Show tomorrow night.  You might even hear some classic Dad stories from back in the day! Send Dad out to the golf course for a relaxing round, or rent a bay at Top Golf for a few hours, and let Dad hit all the golf balls his heart desires.  No one will have to chase after them regardless how badly he slices or hooks!

Main Gate Square has Latin Jazz tonight with The LoBros, two trombone playing UofA graduate brothers!  Enjoy more cool temperatures at the Creatures of the Night at The Sonoran Desert Museum tonight.  Have you heard or seen this man?  He’s a talented magician who’s all about fun. Catch Michael Carbonaro on Saturday night at Desert Diamond Casino.

Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend!

If you’re a student of Arizona history you will want to learn more about the Tohono O’odham Nation’s culture, crafts, food and ceremony at the 2nd Annual Waila Celebration held at Desert Diamond Center today and tomorrow.  The O’odham Nation is comprised of approximately 25,000 members with 20,000 members living here in Arizona. 

Love it or hate it, summer is coming, so it’s time to enjoy perhaps the coolest weather we’ll see for months! Get started tonight as Reid Park Zoo kicks off its Summer Safari Nights featuring live music, activities and animals of course! Remember when you saw the circus as a child?  Well Cirque Italia certainly isn’t your father’s circus as they say.  Premiering here in Tucson tonight Cirque Italia promises a 35,000 gallon water stage and outstanding acrobatics, mesmerizing music and first rate production qualities.  

Enjoy a music-filled weekend starting with Main Gate Square’s Friday Night Live Summer Jazz Series.  Tonight catch Neamen Lyles playing every student’s favorite, smooth jazz!  Wait, the students are on break?  What a coincidence!  You can get up and dance to the guitar driven rhythms of samba and flamenco, as The Gypsy Kings are at the Fox tonight at 7pm.  Speaking of dancing, Ballet Tucson presents the season’s final performance on Sunday with three short pieces including Swan Lake Act II, Bits & Pieces and Back to Bach.  Also on Sunday night, relax and enjoy the powerful singing of two smart and talented UofA grads, Katherine Byrnes and Crystal Stark.  They perform with the Tucson Pops Orchestra at the Reid Park outdoor performance center.  Or get your groove on with Boyz II Men at Casino Del Sol’s AVA Amphitheatre under the stars.

To Infinity and Beyond? How about, To The Tucson Music Hall and Beyond!  Catch some laughs tomorrow night with Buzz Lightyear himself, as Tim Allen performs standup.  He’ll draw upon his many personas including said Mr. Lightyear, The Santa Clause and Tim the Tool Man.
