February 13th, 2017, is the day that I took the action step I promised I’d do in order to combat structural racism. For those who do not understand how fearful it can be to do something like that, it feels like you’re crossing the road at a time when traffic is seriously about to hurt you.
I was tense, and my head felt hot. My body language portrayed guardedness, and at times, I wanted to cry. Thankfully, I had allies who were able to read these cues well and helped keep me afloat on behalf of everyone impacted by racism.
My goal was to make the first step in addressing the voicelessness often inherent in internalized oppression, and I was able to accomplish it today.
I just have to remember the wise words of someone whom I felt I had to share this moment with, “I’m so happy for you, but please protect yourself.” With change comes the battle to maintain the status quo so I have to be smart about it.
I don’t want to get hit by any cars.
