they also roam the strange hole filled plane that is the roblox website

When Grooveshark was still up and running, I was a fan of their maintenance page. Not only did they add character to it (literally! Pickles the Panda is adorbs!), they integrated their Twitter and Tumblr feeds so users could follow along with status updates in real-time. Plus, they found an opportunity to plug their merch store (because who doesn’t enjoy a little online shopping whilst waiting?).

Quick maintenance page with nginx

There are often situations when the web-service should display maintenance page, something like "Maintenance, come back later!". It is not always an application that implements this functionality. But if we have nginx "before" the our application then you can do something like this:

location @ban try_files /stub.html =404; } error_page 418 =200 @ban; location / { if ( -f /etc/stub ) { return 418; } proxy_pass http://backends:8080; }

Now you can run touch /etc/stub and your nginx will response with stub.html fro root dir. Turn on proxying again by /etc/stub removing. And you don't need restart your nginx.

A .htaccess maintenance page

Every now and then you may want to throw up a maintenance page on your web application when you are doing something that might take the site offline. This is especially true in the early stages when you may have not added any way off putting your site in to maintenance mode form inside the application. So here is a totally .htaccess way of doing it. You need to create a maintenance page that is publicably accessible, you then add this into your htaccess file. 

RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^255\.255\.255\.255 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/maintenance\.html$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/maintenance.html [R=307,L]

The rewrite condition after we do the setup '%{REMOTE_ADDR} is where you need to put your own IP address that is the IP Address that you want to be able to do the maintenance from , no point stopping yourself from seeing the site. The next condition should be the name and extension of you maintenance page , this stops the server ending up in a never ending redirect loop. Then at the end its the Rewrite rule this routes all the traffic that doesn't meet the first 2 rules to the maintenance page. You will need to replace the http://example.com/maintenance.html with the actual full path to your maintenance page and that's it.  I normally leave that in the .htaccess file and just uncomment it when needed and re-upload it.
