what’s your experience been double majoring with theater and cs?? i’m looking into something similar buts it’s kinda daunting
ah, heck. I’m so sorry it’s taken me this long to answer—I don’t know why I hadn’t seen this until now?? ffs @ tumblr for not sending me a notification >.<
anyway. my experience with double majoring, so far (keep in mind that I’m currently only declared for theatre because my school’s cs program has more prerequisites to declare) has been that it’s difficult but possible. I think you definitely have to do your research:
- before selecting a school:
1a. make sure they’ll allow you to do it (you can find this out by googling and comparing the major programs to get an idea of whether it seems to be allowed; some schools will have rules against double majors in different colleges, for instance, which might apply to theatre and cs since they’re so different)
1b. make sure it’s actually feasible in practice (I would recommend talking to an advisor from each department either in person or over the phone. part of the reason I chose the school I’m currently going to is because the theatre department advisor is really excellent and assured me that if that’s what I wanted to do, he would help me figure out how to make it happen.)
- once you’re at your school: stay in communication with your departmental advisors, and start planning early. I made up a four-year plan my first week of freshman year, and that helped massively in terms of figuring out that I do have time for all of the classes if the scheduling gods favor me. But then, don’t get too attached to your plan—I’d already deviated from mine by second semester of my first year, but having it in the first place gave me something to work with. Also, consider that balancing your time equally between your two majors may be really difficult ... what I’m currently trying to do is sort of alternate semesters—so last semester, I spent more time on cs with lab assisting and a last-minute cs elective class, and next semester, I plan to forego those two things in favor of auditioning for a bunch of shows and *fingers crossed* getting into one so I’ll spend more time on theatre.
before this gets too long, I’ll end with: yeah, it is daunting, tbh. but ultimately, if it’s really what you want to do, I think it is possible with the correct planning.
I hope this was at least a bit helpful, and if you see this and want to message me more about your situation, I can try to give you more specific advice :)
