British Makeover Shows in the 2000s
100% Hotter bothers me
100% Hotter makes me really annoyed. The conversations the team has with each other are so forced it’s painful. I hate the make-up & hair people talking about the client mere seconds before they enter the room. It just creates this whole air of “yes, we were literally just talking about you.” that makes it super uncomfortable for the client.
The CHALLENGES that the team puts their clients through are awful! You’re already taking a person that is emotional because they’ve just been told that they look awful. You’ve stripped them down to wearing a skin-tight jumpsuit with only a t-shirt to cover up with and sent them to do something SUPER embarrassing in public.
Having a girl go into a hardware store and compare her fake tan color with wood varnish colors?
Send another girl to an industrial shredder to SHRED her clothes? (and then only replace all those items with what... two outfits? That’s nice.)
Have a girl dress in a HAIR suit and have the public ‘cut her hair to an acceptable length’?
The ONLY challenge that was acceptable was the girl who had to go into a public setting and ask strangers to take selfies with her. It was cute. That is a fun way to gain a little confidence after being stripped of her clothes and makeup... without being a dick about their life/fashion choices before they met this “stylist team”.
I don’t feel that the show touched on any real subjects either. A lot of reasons that people overdo it is because they “feel uncomfortable without makeup (or over the top clothes).” There were no meaningful conversations getting to the crux of the matter. There weren’t any big moments with the clients realizing why they think a certain way about themselves, there were no real conversations that provided a stepping off point to help the clients realize that they need to work on loving themselves.
It left me feeling that the team didn’t fix anything. The clients had very little say in the process which makes it harder for them to like and stick to their new look. Even in the wrap-up sessions, you can see some of the clients starting to fall into old habits. If you want the new look to stick, there needs to be more than just a day or two of them really quickly “fixing them up” and all but shoving them out the door (which the show felt like it was doing with every single client)!
Two episodes was enough thanks. Won’t be finishing this series.
gratuitous squealing, qe netflix edition
I’ve been watching the queer eye reboot on netflix and it’s a lot of feel-good fun. Warning: this post is basically just me squealing about Antoni and Jonathan.
Cos Antoni is super hot, and Jonathan is an ADORABLE bundle of joy.
Bobby does so much heavy lifting; he basically redecorates every single house they go to, and Tan is giving me this gentle-daddy vibe when he teaches people what colours work for them and how he’s organised their closet.
I still have no idea what Karamo’s job is.
Plus unf, Antoni... His kitchen skills are even sexier.
Lynda Williamson calls on the experts from My Life for Sale to help her transform her bedroom from a pink dark hole into a bright and upbeat room of relaxation.
In order to do so she must sale a few things from her home to receive her dream room. Watch this amazing transformation unfold now on Vibrant TV!

I figured out what bugs me about a lot of makeover shows. The makeover isn't dependent on what the person thinks of themselves or finding their own image, it's we the hosts think you look great, but these strangers on the streets think you look good and that matters. You feel weird and uncomfortable, let's not work on making you feeling good in this new look, let's peer pressure you into liking it. Fuck off with that shit!
i love how on makeover shows damn near all of the black women get their hair whacked off, straightened and cut into some horrible mid 00s cool white suburban mom style. they also tend to get the worst outfits but whatever.
I've got some serious beef with the show 'what not to wear' its all like man you love pink frills and animal print, man you love black pleather and zippers, man you love wearing sweat pants for COMFORT, quick all of you must wear fuckign beige slacks a blazer and floral print blouse underneath like fuck y'all let these people live and wear whatever the fuck they want
girl wears clothes that are not tight and/or revealing: you should embrace your body, stop being so insecure, dress sexier!!!11!
girl wears clothes that are tight and/or revealing: covering up is sexy, you look trashy like this, you're not attracting the right kind of guy!11!!!
