Making it clear.
Okay so I’ve seen the video and seen what people are saying and here’s my stance on it. Personally from the perspective of a fellow Brit, I can understand that our perspective of humour and suchlike are different and can be misconstrued as deeply rooted in horrid prejudice. I will say however, that I do understand many people’s frustrations over what Dom said and I’m neither condoning or encouraging the use of such words in a way that is meant to attack and be genuinely deeply hurtful to others.
But, I will also say that anyone out there who is out there deciding to place themselves against Dom, I think you need to take a step back and take it with a pinch of salt. When Dom walked in, still sporting his fake american accent as he’s explained he maintains it whilst filming to make it easier for himself whilst shooting scenes through the day, it’s clear that he walked in with the inclination that Matt wasn’t doing a live chat or at least he may have perceived himself to have not been as loud as he actually was and so he was just going to playfully call him the name that he did and Matt from what it seems clearly knew that people weren’t going to understand that it was all in good fun as he understands more about their humour than the audience and so Matt reacts basically saying ‘whoa!’ to then proceed and stop Dom, but obviously Dom doesn’t know the goings on so he’s genuinely confused and wonders if it’s due to the clothes he’s wearing. Obviously many of those who are prominently within the LGBT+ community are going to be upset and I get that and I’m not being over protective of Dom but I think things need to be put into perspective.
I’m sure there’ll be an apology made or otherwise some sort of addressing of what’s happened in the next few days or so and whether or not you accept it I feel like we need to understand that people say stupid things all the time, whether it’s for laughs or not. I can promise you that me and my friends have said things far worse that Dominic Sherwood over here, the only difference is that we haven’t been accidentally recorded saying the things that we do. There is still a serious double standard when it comes down to who we blame or get angry at and who we don’t. There’s also a double standard on what we perceive as jokes or not jokes. I’m sure there are many hypocrites out there attacking Dom whilst they get to hide behind the mask of their username, you might not be saying what Dom is but it doesn’t make it any less stupid or nasty when you say whatever it is you say.
Bottom line is, there’s no excuse for making genuine nasty comments. BUT you can’t just go ahead and cut people off permanently for something that was said in the moment and as cliche as it might sound, we all make mistakes but it’s what we do about those mistakes that truly defines us. That’s all I have to say for now, there’s probably things I forgot or missed but that’s it as it stands.
