WASSUP! question-- what dinosaurs stayed together in groups vs stayed solitary? is there anything that determined this? (like size maybe idk)
(Hi Felix!!)
This is one of my personal favorite topics!
Long story short, we don’t really know. This is the kind of thing that you can’t really get from fossils. However! We can analyze a lot of things to get some clues as to what’s what.
The biggest clue is fossilized footprints and tracks. We have some really good evidence of big groups of dinosaurs walking together, often of different ages. There are also a few cases of different species apparently forming herds together, which I think is really neat! This happens in the real world too - think zebras and wildebeest. Hadrosaurs and sauropods (“duckbills” and “long-necks,” to use Land Before Time terminology) are the most common examples of herding trackways.
(Maiasaura herd)
We can also use evidence from “mass graves.” Things like the Psittacosaurus nest we talked about in the parenting post are also good evidence that dinosaurs lived together, or at least congregated sometimes. Ceratopsians (like Triceratops) have a lot of these.
(Centrosaurus apertus - several hundred individuals were found together in Canada, implying they had lived together)
It’s a bit trickier when discussing theropods (carnivorous dinosaurs). There’s plenty of evidence of them eating together, especially dromaeosaurs (raptors), but this doesn’t really imply social behavior. Lots of modern carnivores group up just to eat, like Komodo dragons: (x)
Lastly, we can infer a lot by looking at modern dinosaurs - birds. Obviously, flocking is a very big thing for birds, and like any physical trait, this is an evolved behavior. Pack hunting, however, is not very common in birds, and most predatory birds like owls and hawks tend to either live alone or in families. Really, it could go either way. Animals exhibit all kinds of social behavior. Lions and tigers, which are really closely related, are almost polar opposites in terms of socialization. So it’s safe to say that plenty of dinosaurs would’ve been solitary, and plenty would’ve been social. The best way to think about this, again, is to go on a case-by-case basis, since you have to take into account ecology, habitat, diet, and lots of other stuff.
