I’d landed my dream role.
Playing Annabeth Chase on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
I loved everything about it — the action scenes, the late nights on set, the cast constantly making each other laugh between takes. It all felt unreal in the best possible way. Ever since I was younger, this was the role I had dreamed about getting, and now I was actually living it.
The cast made it even better. Everyone got along so easily, especially me and Walker Scobell. He was funny, joyful, and somehow always managed to make everyone on set laugh even during stressful filming days.
But there was one problem. I had to act in love with him. And if you’d ever read the books, you already knew what that meant. Percy and Annabeth kissed. Which meant me and Walker had to kiss too.
Now normally, kissing scenes weren’t a huge deal in acting. My boyfriend, Malachi Barton, understood that better than anyone because he was an actor too. He’d done scenes like this before — fake relationships, hand holding, even kissing scenes. He knew how filming worked.
But knowing something logically and actually seeing it were two completely different things.
Which was how we ended up here. Me and Walker stood in front of the cameras while crew members moved around us adjusting lights and fixing microphones.
The entire set was quiet with anticipation because everyone knew how important this scene was. Off to the side, Malachi stood near the monitors watching silently.
“Action.”
Walker stepped closer to me, his hand resting carefully on my waist exactly like the script said. Then he pulled me in. And as he pulled me in, I was disgusted with myself.
Disgusted with the fact that I had to kiss another boy while my boyfriend stood off set watching. A boy who Malachi was friends with, no less.
Walker kissed me softly, acting perfectly for the cameras while my stomach twisted painfully with guilt. To anyone watching the show later, it would probably look romantic — emotional even. But all I could think about was Malachi.
“Cut!”
The second the director yelled it, I pulled away quickly. Around us, the crew seemed excited about how the scene turned out, but I barely paid attention. My eyes immediately searched for Malachi.
He stood there with his arms crossed tightly over his chest, jaw clenched as he stared toward the floor for a second before looking back at me. I could tell he hated seeing it. Even if he understood it. Even if he’d been through the exact same thing himself before. And somehow that made me feel even worse.
Later that afternoon, we sat alone inside my trailer. The muffled sounds of people working outside filled the silence between us while I nervously played with the sleeve of my hoodie. Malachi sat beside me on the couch, leaning back with his head tilted toward the ceiling.
“I didn’t want to kiss him, you know,” I whispered.
Malachi looked over at me immediately, his expression softening. “I know, baby,” he said quietly. “I promise, I know.”
“But you hated it.”
He let out a small breathy laugh. “Yeah. I kinda did.”
I looked down guiltily.
“Hey,” he said quickly, moving closer. “Don’t do that.”
“But you were upset.”
“Because I’m your boyfriend,” he said softly. “Not because I’m mad at you.” His fingers intertwined with mine. “I’ve done scenes like that before too, remember? I know what it’s like.” He gave me a small smile. “You think I liked filming kissing scenes when you had to watch?”
I groaned quietly, covering my face. “Don’t remind me.”
Malachi laughed softly for the first time all night. “It’s part of the job,” he continued. “It doesn’t mean anything.”
I leaned against him, resting my head on his shoulder. “Still felt horrible.”
His arm wrapped around my waist instantly, pulling me closer against him. “Well,” he murmured, “if it makes you feel any better…”
I looked up at him.
“I think I deserve a real kiss after having to watch that.”
A laugh escaped me despite everything. “Oh, you do?”
“Mhm. Compensation.”
I rolled my eyes affectionately. “You’re ridiculous.”
“Yeah,” he grinned, “but you love me anyway.”
Before I could answer, his hand gently tilted my chin upward and his lips met mine. And unlike the kiss on set, this one felt real. No cameras. No scripts. No directors yelling instructions. Just him.
I melted into the kiss almost instantly, my hands tangling in the front of his hoodie while his arms tightened around my waist protectively. Every bit of guilt and tension disappeared the longer he kissed me.
When we finally pulled apart, both of us breathless, Malachi rested his forehead against mine with a soft smile. “See?” he whispered. “Way better than Walker.”
