THROWBACK BROTHERS in BLUE - DANIEL KALUUYA . For today’s throwback TuTchT portraits, I give you THREE BRILLIANT BRITS in BLUE! . I take great pride in celebrating the massive careers of these three incredibly talented London-based actors. I’ve been following & promoting their work for many years - long before they became international stars. I’ve often been told I have a great eye for young talent but the simple fact is that because of the work I create, I’m ALWAYS on the hunt for talented young male actors of color, where ever they are. These three are simply among the best I’ve ever seen. . I first stumbled on the 21y/o Malachi Kirby in 2011. He was making a splash on London stages, immediately followed by short films and Brit TV movies & series. He led me to Femi Ogun’s amazing Identity School of Acting - which led me to a young John Boyega who, the same year KILLED it in Attack the Block. In turn, to their contemporary, the young TV actor/writer Daniel Kaluuya who’s work in Black Mirror that same year, blew me away. . Now, a decade later, they are well-established celebrities with continuously skyrocketing careers. But even if this shine and celebrity status hadn’t found them I would still have been foremost among their fans simply because of their pure skills! . I created this portrait of Daniel in the lead up to the Oscars, 2018 to celebrate his Best Actor nom for Get Out, one of the most Truthful performances to ever be captured on film. 2020 - THE WINTER THAT STAYED . I've got mad love for this brother, UK Actor MALACHI KIRBY with his chill exterior & purpose-fired interior! One of the best actors/best humans I've ever come across. Can’t say enough about this guy (plus I need room for all the creds below.) A longtime pillar in London's state and screen acting community, Malachi made his US debut in 2016 with a brilliant, soul-wrenching, criticially-lauded performance as Kunte Kinte in the ROOTS miniseries, Since then, his UK-based career Highlights have been: a critically acclaimed stage performance in London’s West End, a starring role in a disturbing episode of Black Mirror, and a lead in last year’s high octane street race drama series "Curfew." His new series with Patrick Dempsey, DEVILS, an Italian spy thriller set in the international investment banking world, dropped in Italian & UK markets last month (coming soon to the USA.) Mr. Kirby has also impressively stepped into the playwright role with his world premiere gritty urban joint, “Level Up” set to open in London’s famed West End. (currently Covid-delayed along with all West End shows.) . But this brother never rests on his props. 2021 will bring us his recently completed pressure-cooker-f-a-film "Boiling Point," set in a restaurant kitchen, He's currently filming a new miniseries written and directed by “12 Years a Slave” helmer Steve McQueen. This @bbcone series, “Small Axe” is set in London’s West Indian community in the 80s and pairs Malachi, for the first time, with his fellow @Identitydrama_ classmates & fellow superstars @JohnBoyega & @Letitiawright. . NAME DROP NINTH (yeah, its a thing) This one isn’t really about us at all, but it still gave me that #NDN thrill when I saw it. Multi-Award-Winning writer/director Paul Haggis, the only screenwriter to ever win “Best Screenplay” Oscars back to back, (Clint Eastwood helmed “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash” which Mr. Haggis also directed,) has written some of my favorite films and lives a life of philanthropic service that even deepens my respect. And you’re probably aware of my equal admiration for Malachi Kirby. My posts are rarely seen by more than 100 people, and i wasn’t even following Mr. Haggis at the time, so this was really out of the blue; I’m still not even sure how he came across the post. I am thrilled that these two great men, masters of their respective crafts, intersected in our tiny little cyber backyard! IDENTIFIED AT LAST!!! (PART II) If you’ve been following me for very long I’m sure you’ve heard me shouting about Femi Ogun’s Identity School of Acting in London and 2 of my favorite young black actors to emerge from this amazing school. Back when I first started dropping their names very few Americans had heard of them and I had to jump through lots of hoops just to see their UK-based work here in the States. Now household names and on the lips of Hollywood’s movers and shakers, John Boyega and Malachi Kirby have officially blown up, and Femi Oguns is FINALLY getting the shine he deserves in the British mainstream media - 14 years after lighting his candle in the darkness. (Selah) Having watched misters Kirby and Boyega grow from American obscurity to “it boys” gives me an even deeper kindred sense of brotherhood with Identity than I had before. (and helps bolster the claims I sometimes hear in my corner of the industry about my “eye for new talent.”) Even tho I definitely fit the description of “outsider,” hahaha, this report by the BBC’s Colleen Harris gave me a warm familial feeling.
