Tasting: Rare Malawi Twist Oolong (African Oolong)
I bought a fair amount of this tea I’m not even sure how many years ago. It was a part of a limited edition series of micro lot teas from DavidsTea, which basically meant stock was VERY limited and when it was gone it was gone. It was honestly love at first steep and I knew I needed to get my hands on as much of it as possible before it was gone. Thankfully I did because it hasn’t been back since.
African teas from Kenya are generally easy to find, as many high end tea retailers usually carry at least one variety. However teas from Malawi are much more rare to come across. In doing some recent research I have come across a few retailers who offer teas from this area, but as you can imagine the price is high!
It’s a beautiful oolong with a stunning amber color. Upon opening the tin you are met with a wonderful toasty aroma. The taste of the tea has notes of stone fruit, fresh fall leaves, and a slight vegetal note after a few infusions.
I treasure this tea. I don’t drink it as often as I’d like so I can savor it for as long as I can, but when I do it’s always a real moment.
