So just watched Firebird, and I understand why people love OUAT's Peter Pan and Captain Hook, while simultaneously don't understand it. And when it comes to this episode, I don't understand.
All through Firebird, all I could is look at the portrayal of Captain Hook by Colin O'Donogue and Peter Pan by Robbie and Kay and wonder... "How is this Peter Pan and Captain Hook?"
It's Killian Jones, Emma's love interest, and Malcolm Stiltskin Gold, Rumplestiltskin's father.
That's all Hook and Peter Pan have been relegated to.
They're hardly their own characters.
The are NOT Captain Hook and Peter Pan.
And Season 5 really solidifies it. If you love Peter Pan and Captain Hook from the original tale, there is no fucking reason to watch the later seasons after Season 3.
While I can understand to a certain point why some people might like the twist of Peter Pan being Rumplestiltskin's father, I also just don't.
I feel like you can only like it if you're a Rumplestiltskin fan or if you like twists or don't mind different fairy tale characters from different stories are related to each other.
I am not a Rumplestiltskin fan. Or at least I'm a Peter Pan fan first. Rumplestiltskin was okay Season 1. But then he was utilized to basically be the victim of Hook's toxic masculinity, because apparently it's so in character of Captain Hook to take a woman away from her husband only for it to be revealed that woman was in love with him. In fact, it makes sense for Hook to fall in love with a woman whose only ever shown to verbally abuse and diminish her husband in front of other men...like how hot is that, am I right? I fail to see how any man would be attracted to her but okay I guess. But seriously, that's all Milah is every shown to do that I can't blame the fanbase on hating her and I feel like that's in design to how the writers wanted to portray her while ignoring how very little power as a woman Milah actually has and how dependent she has to be to other men because of the society she lives in.
It's understandable in the eyes of any other woman, why Milah is angry even if her treatment of Rumplestiltskin is horrible. She is trapped in a marriage with a man who she has come to despise because his actions have painted a bad picture on him and his family, but most of all, he had proven, in her eyes, that the people were right about him after all. Or perhaps, before, it was basically Rumple is labeled a coward because of his father and sons aren't always like their fathers. It's not his fault. But then when he ran away from battle, there was no denying who he was because that was his actions. Though also I know he did it for Baelfire and the seer's warning affecting him so don't get me wrong, I don't agree with Milah here, but this is what she's probably thinking. Milah's reputation is linked to Rumplestiltskin because she is his wife. It's not the life she wanted. To live a hard life, and being ostracized I suppose? Idk I'm trying to give some reason for Milah's behavior here and why she ran away with Killian which ultimately WAS a GOOD thing because imagine Baelfire growing up with a mother who always verbally abuse her husband. Not a great way for a boy to grow. Plus if she had stayed, no doubt she would've gone to some extreme measures to protect Baelfire like how she wanted Rumple to kill the healer for a potion to cure their son's snake bite. I understood why Rumple ultimately didn't, and why he took the healer's deal, but I also understood Milah's feelings, because it's just another thing where Rumple made a choice without consulting her and now she can't have another child if she wanted to and thus no change in her life and she has to be content with what she had, which is what Rumple wants, but she can't.
Honestly, I love Milah and Rumple's relationship and history.
I just wish Hook was NOT added to the mix.
Not only does it make Captain Swan such a weird ship, but I also do not believe the actual Hook would ever go with a woman like Milah (he might steal another man's wife though idk...I kinda think he wouldn't but again idk...)
But anyway, because they put Hook into the mix and have Rumple be the one to CUT OFF Hook's hand, I've started to get cold with Rumplestiltskin.
And then with the reveal of Peter Pan being Rumplestiltskin's father...
And now just watching him and how he's just horrible. I just hate him. I don't care to justify his actions. I hate him.
Because he's the reason Peter Pan is not Peter Pan.
And Captain Hook is not Captain Hook.
They literally don't feel like it.
Technically, maybe I should hate Emma but idk I liked Emma so much Season 1 that idk I'm trying to ignore how changed she's become. She, to an extent, feels like Emma so idk.
But Rumplestiltskin... ugh man, they overutilized this man. I wish he would die. I genuinely wish he would die.
Or become endgame villian.
I wish the Peter Pan story was rewritten so Peter Pan and Captain Hook could feel like Peter Pan and Captain Hook.
I wish Captain Swan wasn't a thing.
Ugh I just hate everything that Once Upon a Time has turned into.
