Valley Girl (1983)
Queen Martha Coolidge's delightful, quietly brilliant (and subversively feminist) spin on Romeo and Juliet is a swoonworthy romp through early 80s Los Angeles, which feels like one of the few teen comedies that seems to accurately capture the sweetness and banality of falling in love when you're young. Stars real-life lovers Deborah Foreman and Nicolas Cage (his first film under his now-famous stage name) and set to a never-topped alt pop soundtrack. When that iconic "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You" needle drop hits, it tugs directly on your heart strings.
Director: Martha Coolidge
Cinematographer: Frederick Elmes
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Deborah Foreman, Elizabeth Daily, Cameron Dye, Michael Bowen, Michelle Meyrink, Lee Purcell, Richard Sanders, Colleen Camp, and Frederic Forrest
Mall core.
There’s something about a mall that decays.
It’s rotting.
The fluorescent overhead lights cook your blood dry. The linoleum floors drag your soul down and out through the soles of your shoes. The stores are suffocating, the people are insufferable, the food is full of grease and meat and dear god do the flies know about it. They’re absolutely fucking privy.
It’s the environment itself but you’re a part of the ecosystem the second you push and pull and force your way through the heavy metal door, partially because the accessible button hasn’t been operable for years. And also because there’s something about the smell that’s so horrid it’s enticing.
It rots.
You’re rotting.
Or at least that’s what Evan’s doing.
