The ripening fruits of Malus x floribunda (Japanese Crab Apple). Today’s #oneadayplant . A few months ago I had a flowering Malus domestica (dessert/eating/cooking apple) as my One A Day Plant. I love many forms of Apple, but have a particular soft spot for crab apples. Generally too tart to be eaten from the tree, they make excellent crab apple jelly preserves. . Because growing and picking a delicious crop is less of a concern for most gardeners (as it would be with a tree producing delicious fruits), we tend to admire them on their own terms. Lots of lovely bud and flower in spring, typically followed by fruits produced in abundance and often decent autumn colour later. They make excellent pollinating trees too, so will often be found at the end of rows in orchards. Of all the small garden trees available Crab Apples have to be right up there as favourites of mine. Their compact habit and fruit make them very garden scaled and an excellent source of food for wildlife, if not for you. . Great pollinator plant. Great insect plant in flower. Lots of birds eat the fruit (yellow Crab Apples tends to be left the longest by birds). . Easy to grow and maintain. We probably plant more Crab Apples in native hedgerows than we do in gardens nowadays. Malus sylvestris is our native species, which is less colourful in fruit, but a good thing regardless. .
