Sometimes I think about how Shadow’s mom probably wanted him to become a philosophy professor or a translator like her and amount to all these amazing things, but he has emotional scars six inches deep from having the only family member he had die slowly from cancer and it made him lose his sense of direction and drive to aspire to become an ER doctor who saves lives on the daily or a fierce activist for human rights his people and people like him get deprived of to this day.

It’s not hard to see Shadow is a follower, it speaks to the very construct of his character becoming a believer in Gods and the like. He followed after his mom and adults because he had no friends, thus garnering his name of “Shadow”. He committed a crime for Laura because she wanted him to and he was down for them to have credit cards in her name only because he had no problems living a matriarchal life (also low key, Laura’s definitely going to have better credit than Shadow, let’s be real, kids) where his wife handles the money. And now he’s Wednesday’s bodyguard, going where he tells him to, tackling shooters at the risk of his own life, and being a beta when he has the potential to be a True Alpha a la Scott McCall.

Anyways, long story short, Shadow was traumatized by Mama Moon’s death and he could’ve been so much more.
