Wangechi Mutu "MamaRay"
Mama Ray by Wangechi Mutu
Wangechi Mutu at Gladstone Gallery
Twelve feet in diameter and commanding Gladstone Gallery’s entire front room, Wangechi Mutu’s bronze ‘Mama Ray’ is a force to be reckoned with. Rising up on her wing-like fins to meet visitors, this regal aquatic creature is only head-high but radiates power. Mutu’s bronze sculptures, which include four created for the Met Museum’s prestigious façade commission in 2019, introduce new mythologies devised, the artist explains, to picture new heroes, courage, beauty and love. (On view through June 19th. Masks and social distancing are required.) Wangechi Mutu, detail of Mama Ray, bronze, 65 x 192 x 144 inches, 2020.

“I think they said they’d be bringing over pizza and salad for dinner. I don’t know what kind, but knowing my Mama I’m sure she ordered 2-3 extra larges.” Balia was floating in front of Kas. She had a sewing measuring tape in her hands and was measuring his arm length and then his wrists and then a round his head. While a notepad and a pencil were floating in the air taking down measurements. She had to get all the measurements to her sister pretty quickly so she could start on Kas’s Gambit costume.
“They also said that they still had my nieces. Cause my sister Trista and Adam are running late coming back from her doctors appointment.” she moved to his other arm to do the same. Quickly moving onto the rest of the measurements needed.
“Got anymore questions you want to know before they arrive? And... are you feeling up to that?” she paused and looked up from measuring his waist. She was still a bit worried over how exhausted he’d been after all the crazy that morning, especially their tryst. She had made sure they’d eaten well when they’d woken back up from their long nap.
