Sokka and Kataras mom is a mermaid so the gene passed to Katara but not to Sokka, kinda like how she was a bender but he wasn't, but then I break this rule REPEATEDLY and VIOLENTLY afterwards because kya wasn't ever a bender, mai and yue are not benders, aang and toph are completely different types of mermaids/more like actual sea monsters, etc etc list goes on for who I have and haven't touched.
