UNDERRATED NPC OF THE DAY #4: Mamere

“Uh... Wait, so this is a trick too...?”

Drawing with my non-dominant hand takes longer time… but it’s kind of fun. Because there’s less pressure to make it look good, I end up actually focusing more on drawing.

The wobbliness is kind of cute

Lately I finished watching a playthrough of Ancient Colors. I quite like the story. Unreliable narrator, a cute whimsy with questionable and unexplained bits that are revealed to be horror and tied together at the end.

But I was too aware of the default animated gestures and lack of detailed facial animation that I couldn’t focus on the story emotionally outside of a few scenes. (Though I’m sure the lack of voice-overs was a reason too.)

It’s a little hard to focus on the story when I’m thinking “If only the dialogue is well-edited, if only this had voice-over and a much better cinematography…” Could be a little fantasy & psychological horror short film. I wonder how this would work as a short story told through Mamere’s (or more generally Melusine’s) perspective… Floaty white jelly fish

Context: in Ancient Colors act 1 scene 1, Mamere describes Jakob like this:

“是个相当帅气的人哦。而且…而且还很温柔。” (“A rather handsome person~ And… and quite gentle, too.”)

English version: “A rather cool person. And… quite gentle, too.”

哦 — Added at the end of a declarative sentence to sound softer or more friendly and less… declarative? Some Melusines use this.

帅气 — Has both meanings of “handsome” and “cool” (with a brighter vibe). Can also be used to describe someone’s vibe and not just appearance. More impersonal, like you’re describing something but without the romantic attraction that’s typically associated with calling someone 帅 (handsome). (帅 is used to describe one’s physical appearance…?)

Compare with 酷 which is more “cool” in a… bad boy way? (By human standards Neuvillette could be described as 帅气 but Wriothesley could be described as 酷, I guess.)

Handsome, perhaps because Mamere thinks Jakob is aesthetically pleasing (she’s a painter after all), or because she senses who he really is?

English version uses “cool” which I interpreted as attractive in a level-headed way, but… Hm. Certainly not in a “oh dude that’s so cool” way.

Kaykaus: Oh, so you like purple, do you, Boss?

Irus: What in the world are you talking about, you idiot? Of course not! How's that guy handsome, anyway — also, what kind of reason is "I like purple"!?

大姐 — “sis” as in, female leader of a gang… kind of? Not sure if there’s a better English equivalent. In a sibling context 姐 means older sister. May also be taken as an insult because it makes the other person sound old. It’s complicated.

怎么可能啊！— kind of a rhetorical “How’s that possible!”/“How could that be!”, more directly…?

Start transcription.

Shot 1: eye level, OTS (over-the-shoulder), truck left. Facing the eremite Irus, Jakob Ingold smiles, and places a hand over his chest. Jakob says, “Get rid of these people. As for your pay... Will 7 times the original amount do?”

Shot 2: high angle MCU (medium close-up), arc left. Paimon floats between Lumine and Mamere, who have blank expressions. She places her hands on her hips angrily. Paimon says, “Heh! You don't think you can take (Traveler) out with just these few people, do you?” Hand written note beside the panel says “what’s w/ this crowded group shot b/c of Pai”

Shot 3: eye level, MLS (medium long shot), pedestal up. Kaykaus stands before Seymour and another eremite, and gestures with one hand at Jakob, who’s in the foreground, his face not visible. Kaykaus says, “Y-Y'know, boss, she's right. We won't be able to take that person out by ourselves...” Handwritten note beside the panel says, “why’s the staging w/ Sey so poor”

Shot 4: eye level, OTS, arc right. Reverse shot, as Jakob gestures back to Kaykaus with a smile. Jakob says, “You're mercenaries, aren't you? You should know more about combat than I do.”

Shot 5: eye level, MCU, still. Jacob looks towards his left and says, “Since you have the numbers, why are you fixated on your strongest foe? Is there not someone there who cannot fight?”

Shot 6: eye level, MCU, dolly in. Mamere stares blankly, and says, “…Eh?”

Handwriting in red: “belated realization of purpose: show Jakob’s confusing & manipulative nature, & Mamere’s naivety.” End transcription.

(Now, I’d like to think Jacob is in most of these shots because he’s in control of the scene, but… I might also be looking into these six shots too much. Still, I feel like the cinematography could be done in a better and more meaningful way, somehow.)

I think I’m getting better at drawing vaguely unsettling but cute things.

(Somehow, experimental stuff with brush texture is fun and combining characteristics of human kids with other creatures work well for Melusines :D)
