Cardboard Faith and Dionysian Spectacle
Chapter 4: Scene 3: Deconstruction/Reconstruction
Mature | Graphic Depictions Of [Psychological, including Spiritual] Violence, Author Chooses Not to Use Archive Warnings | Dionie (OC) & Furina, Dionie (OC) & Lynette
Break it, and you break reality.
To worship "sin" and light the flames,
To save the future of Fontaine,
Unblemish faith and wash away
The fragrant doubts that bloom astray?
How do I say this. I realize after writing this chapter that one section could sound like a description of sexual assault, emotionally and based on the language used, although on a literal level it’s non-sexual touching (still coercive/without consent though). So I’ve updated the Archive Warning to reflect that. It’s an important moment for the narrative however, so I needed a description to emphasize its emotional weight.
(Did I just use the em-dash to end five consecutive paragraphs LOL it made more sense when I wrote it man. Dionie is getting her line of thought interrupted often here.)
But anyway, this was intense to write. Furina commenting on Dionie's bracelet and forcing her to show it was the worst thing I could think of when I first wrote this. For some time, I couldn't figure out how to transition from that part to Dionie laughing because the two sections were written with a gap in between them, but later writing Furina grabbing Dionie's wrist worked, difficult as it was, given how it's framed.
The next few chapters are still in their drafting stage, as I'm not sure how to order them together. But the end of this chapter was a new addition that should hint at what's to come.
Still, thank you for reading. I hope you're doing well; please take care of yourself.
Lord of Contracts, in your name I honour the actor's agreement, and seek an audience with Lady Furina.
You make a pinkie promise, you keep it all your life.
You break a pinkie promise, I throw you on the ice...
O Lady Archon! heed this song of mine:
Of judgment, contracts, human and divine.
The scales of justice tilt towards its god
Whose fairness waits for audience applause.
On stage, the actor is under an agreement at all times: one between themselves and the audience. Abiding by this contract on behalf of her Director, the actor Dionie meets with Lady Furina to discuss her conduct as a former consultant of the troupe Dionie belongs to.
Yet resentment seeps through Dionie's honeyed words. As Lady Furina asserts her divine authority again and again, Dionie starts to wonder:
When sharing a stage with the God of Justice, what waits on the other end of the scales?
(Set before the Fontaine Archon Quest, ex-colleagues Dionie & Lady Furina meeting to discuss theatre, justice, and religion. More tags may be added.)
