This is literally my favorite scene in the odyssey
Irus comic part1
My favorite scenes from The Odyssey (books 18 to 21)
Odysseus fighting a random beggar being its own book was not something I expected to enjoy this much when reading The Odyssey, but here we are.
Irus has starlight in her fur~
Reading the Odyssey for the first time, and within the first ten or so books, there are already a few things that I think adaptations and modern media have missed completely. Not just adaptations or retellings of the Odyssey, but little tangents about the other characters and gods as well.
Thinking of doing some doodles based on them. Here's a short list of ideas (mostly for myself so that I don't forget).
Edit: The "short list" has actually expanded to ten things upon finishing the books.
The way other characters, namely Menelaus and Agamemnon, talk about their wives vs. everyone's general consensus on Penelope.
The story of Hephaestus catching Aphrodite cheating on him (with his brother) and how he tried humiliating her, but his OTHER BROTHERS said they would have boned her too, given the opportunity.
Athena having to make Odysseus more handsome so that he doesn't scare Nausicaa. 😭
Odysseus' raft from Ogygia (Calypso's island) to Phaeacia/Faiakia. Even the live action version depicts is as some wimpy little piece of driftwood, but it had walls and a sail despite being handmade by Odysseus in three days.
Odysseus explaining to his men that they can't have Helios' cattle, then waking up to the smell of cooked beef.
Telemachus being rude as fuck to Penelope. Seriously, I think he hates his mom.
Argos dying the second he greets Odysseus, after years of neglect.
Antinous throwing a stool at old man Odysseus, but it breaks on his shoulder without reaction as Odysseus mogs him.
Odysseus being a fucking Baki character. He looks like an old man but with toned ass thighs (Homer's words, not mine), and nearly kills Irus in one hit.
Elpenor makes it to Hades, but not in the way you'd think. During the only part of the Odyssey where there is ZERO danger, a drunken Elpenor falls off Circe's roof and breaks his neck. Odysseus meets him along with his mother in Hades.

The scents of tobacco and lavender perfume the air of the now-empty Thanatology classroom. It's the usual culprit, finally comfortable enough in his isolation to peel the soft suede gloves from his hands and remove the cigarette from between his lips. Irus discards them on the table-top, spreading out his grimoire as he exhales a lungful of herbal smoke. His shadow looks on with disappointment, flickering as it winds itself upwards to peer over his shoulder. "Where is it...?" He questions, muttering under his breath as he guides a blackened fingertip across its pages. The cigarette is placed back into his mouth as he turns the page, narrowing his eyes. His hands abandon the page to push hair back from his eyes, then return to tracing the text. "I swore that incantation was--" Startled from his focus, Irus turns to face the intruder. Steely eyes gauge the threat, picking over the newcomer with a mild look of annoyance. He exhales sharply through his nose, producing two more puffs of smoke. "What are you doing here?"
Context: in Ancient Colors act 1 scene 1, Mamere describes Jakob like this:
“是个相当帅气的人哦。而且…而且还很温柔。” (“A rather handsome person~ And… and quite gentle, too.”)
English version: “A rather cool person. And… quite gentle, too.”
T/N
哦 — Added at the end of a declarative sentence to sound softer or more friendly and less… declarative? Some Melusines use this.
帅气 — Has both meanings of “handsome” and “cool” (with a brighter vibe). Can also be used to describe someone’s vibe and not just appearance. More impersonal, like you’re describing something but without the romantic attraction that’s typically associated with calling someone 帅 (handsome). (帅 is used to describe one’s physical appearance…?)
Compare with 酷 which is more “cool” in a… bad boy way? (By human standards Neuvillette could be described as 帅气 but Wriothesley could be described as 酷, I guess.)
Handsome, perhaps because Mamere thinks Jakob is aesthetically pleasing (she’s a painter after all), or because she senses who he really is?
English version uses “cool” which I interpreted as attractive in a level-headed way, but… Hm. Certainly not in a “oh dude that’s so cool” way.

Ancient Colors act 2
Mamere: Is it because... you thought he [Jakob] was handsome?
Kaykaus: Oh, so you like purple, do you, Boss?
Irus: What in the world are you talking about, you idiot? Of course not! How's that guy handsome, anyway — also, what kind of reason is "I like purple"!?
Kksjsjsjs wait wait I need to check something
Oh my god
Mamere does call him handsome, and Kaykaus and Irus basically go
Kaykaus: Ohh, so that’s how it is, sis! You like purple?
Irus: Idiot, the hell are you talking about! You think that’s what it is? And that guy’s not handsome at all, right? And what kind of reason is “I like purple”!?
T/N
大姐 — “sis” as in, female leader of a gang… kind of? Not sure if there’s a better English equivalent. In a sibling context 姐 means older sister. May also be taken as an insult because it makes the other person sound old. It’s complicated.
怎么可能啊!— kind of a rhetorical “How’s that possible!”/“How could that be!”, more directly…?

#3053 - Irus crenatus - Boring Venus Shell
Found in shallow waters from the southern half of Australia.
The common name derives from the lifestyle, embedded in soft rock and hardened sediment, rather than any judgement on its nondescript appearance. It's likely that some supposedly related species such as crebrelamellatus are actually the same one, with the shell shaped by the substrate it grows in.
