After 10 years of being vegetarian, myself and Jeni decided to go vegan last month in an attempt to do just a bit more for the planet and our bodies.
I love burgers and all the trimmings but normally when you go to some places you only get offered a bean burger, plus, you don’t know if they are cooking it on the same grill as other meat-burgers. Some vegan/veggie friends of ours recommended for us to visit V REV, a vegan diner in the Northern Quarter of Manchester on Edge Street. We have heard stories of these great-tasting burgers, milkshakes and everything else the diner offers, so on this rather sunny morning we got on the bus and took a trip there.
On our arrival we were impressed with the exterior and excited to get inside. On entering we were greeted by the friendly staff and asked to take a seat, it was very clean and modern-looking with a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of art on the walls to keep our eyes happy. Our server waited a few minutes to make sure we were comfortable then asked us what we would like to drink; we ordered an Americano coffee and two peanut butter milkshakes. When our drinks were brought over we were also given two large glasses of water with ice, which was a nice addition.
After looking at the menu and slurping at our shakes we were ready to order. We asked for a double DONUT HAVE A COW MAN! (Beefy patty, Cheez, Baecon, crispy fried onions, BBQ sauce) and a double WHOPPER FLOCKA FLAME (Beefy patty, Cheez, Baecon, lettuce, tomato, burger sauce, onion). We also ordered two portions of fries, one regular and the other BUFFALO RANCH Loaded Fries (Cheez, Baecon, buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, chives).
We were not waiting long before our server was carrying them across to our expectant faces. Yum, yum, it was a delight and so satisfying to get my teeth into a burger with taste. Jeni said her donut burger was beautiful and flavoursome. She doesn’t normally do burgers because of the lack of inspiration in most menus, they’re either bean burgers, mushroom burgers or loaded with red peppers – none of which she likes. We indulged in our usual ‘let’s wolf it down as quickly as possible’ routine, leaving no time in-between mouthfuls for talking, drinking – or even breathing at times! While the portion sizes were not overwhelmingly large we still couldn’t eat everything. The flavours were pleasurable and non-greasy/fatty-tasting – these were quality dishes. We hadn’t eaten anything all day in preparation for this meal so we were a little disappointed we couldn’t cram more in but alas, we called it a day and our server offered us doggy bags, which we politely declined, before handing us the bill.
The prices were extremely reasonable for city centre dining and we have already planned our next trip there and are readying our taste buds for a different burger on their menu…the Bluey Lewis and the News is ringing my bell!
As a vegan or even a vegetarian it is so refreshing to order from a menu without having to repeatedly check for the ‘V’ or ‘Ve’ symbol, or even start harassing your server for information on each and every dish you are remotely interested in before making your final decision.
For us, vegan dining just got simplified and blown into a whole other league. Thank you V REV.
