PREM
The Earth’s mantle is a complicated mixture. In some areas there are slabs of subducted oceanic crust sinking towards the bottom, in other areas warmer material rises upward to the surface, mixing different components together as it moves.
We survey these variations using seismic waves. When an earthquake happens, it sends out two types of waves that travel through the earth, pressure and shear waves, and the speed of those wave types can be used as a way of sampling the rocks they travel through. Different rock types and different temperatures produced changes in seismic wave speeds (read more here: http://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1PmK43_)
In the late 1970s as computing power was increasing, scientists became able to take these data sets and turn them into interesting conclusions about the Earth. One of the first steps is represented here: this is PREM, the Preliminary Reference Earth Model.
Scientists Adam Dziewonski from Harvard and Don Anderson from Caltech took seismic data from hundreds of earthquakes measured all over the world and averaged them, creating a model of how seismic velocities vary through the Earth. That is PREM, a hypothetical 1-Dimensional profile of seismic velocity within the Earth.
Due to increasing pressures and densities, seismic velocities increase with depth, but there is complexity, particularly within the upper mantle. Seismic velocities jump at several depths. These jumps are associated with phase changes within the earth; with increasing pressure the major minerals of the mantle change. Average models like PREM give rough average pressures and depths where these phase changes are reached.
The mantle and core also have different properties. The outer core is liquid so shear waves don’t travel through it at all and pressure waves are slowed down, the inner core is solid iron so shear waves do travel through it and pressure waves move faster through it.

For just $5.00 Cuban Breeze is a masculine blend of leather, Cuban tobacco, pipe tobacco, and suede. Despite that, women love this scent a LOT. All oils used are skin safe and/or essentials. Perfect for: Any room 8-9 ($15) oz burns approximately 70+ hours. This size comes in tin or glass jars. Please specify. My candles and tarts are created using the best organic ingredients and high-quality oils for a non-toxic candle that's not only highly scented but safe and free of environmental and breathing concerns. Soy burns at a lower temperature, so they last longer and burn clean. My products are handmade in my kitchen and individually labeled by hand. Since soy wax is a natural material, each candle may have its own look and/or texture. BURNING YOUR CANDLE When you light your candle for the first time, I recommend burning until a full melt pool has been reached. This will prevent tunneling and increase the burn time of your candle. Soy wax is considered a memory wax, and will only burn to the point of the initial burn. After every burn, once the wax has cooled use your fingers to break off the top burnt part of the wick. A wick that is not trimmed may create burning issues. *If you experience wicks that won't stay lit, simply dig a little pool around them with a butter knife. SHIPPING: In stock items ship within 1-3 days. If something has to be made, it could take a little longer. THE ARTIST: April Hunter is a writer, pro wrestler, model and full-time student. Inspired by the daily life and living it to the fullest. She lives in the Tampa Bay area with her Corgi dog, rescue cat, and backyard chickens. No returns on handmade and custom items.
