Caught up on Radiant
In France and Belgium, an event called "48H BD" was organized and comics/manga were selected for the event, including the first volume of Wakfu which was reissued with an unpublished cover!
My entry for the #radiantdtiys by Tony Valente, I swear, You have no idea how hyped I am to read this tome! I need to see what happens! Best Manfra ever!
also, this is my first Piodon fanart.
Radiant is a manga (or manfra, as it’s originally produced in French) by Tony Valente! It follows the adventures of Seth, who is a sorcerer, in a world where humans are plagued by magical beasts known as Nemesis... and where the touch of a Nemesis either results in death, or that human’s transformation into a sorcerer. Magic is a reviled thing, a curse, resulting in literal infection. And so Seth sets out to stop the Nemesis at their source: the little known origin point of all Nemesis.... The Radiant.
While I love this series a whole lot and wish more people knew about it, it’s not perfect nor without reproach.... there are certainly aspects of it that I criticize, especially within the first four volumes. (At one point, a villain throws about homophobic slurs, and Seth plays into that, taunting the man with threats of kisses... not the finest moment for the manga!) But it seems the creator has grown aware of these shortcomings, as the later volumes don’t share the same problems, and are extremely well crafted and enjoyable. I have zero complaints about the most recent volume, except for the fact that it won’t be legally available in the USA until August of 2022! Oh cruel world!
There does exist an anime of Radiant as well, which is truthfully how I found out about the series! Sadly, although the anime has a stellar voice cast and OST, it was poorly planned and poorly directed. I highly recommend the manga over the anime. Though I did enjoy watching the anime, the manga is STELLAR, whereas the anime is just... fun.
Radiant is published in the USA by Viz! You can find it at a lot of libraries as well, and if your local library doesn’t have it, you might try an inter-library loan (or request that your library add it to their collection, a strategy I have employed before). You can also of course buy the volumes yourself, which I highly recommend ;D (this is a non a/mazon, affiliate link.) I have most of the volumes on my own shelf and I am very pleased with them.
I could go on and on about this manga--about all the wonderful characters, about how good the story arcs are--but I will simply leave you with one of the little snippets of writing that made me laugh, lmao.
Enjoy! (AND THEN COME TALK TO ME ABOUT THIS SERIES PLEASE I’M DYING IT’S SO GOOD AND NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT)
