Manga vs. Anime - Kagome Edition #45 - The Hair Demon

Koga makes his own visit to Naraku's castle, and finds the remains left behind. He's certain it's Naraku's castle due to the scent, but looking around he finds nothing. Knowing that Inuyasha and of course Kagome, are also in search of Naraku, he decides to go and question Inuyasha about it. On his way, he comes to the conclusion that Naraku couldn't be anywhere nearby, because he wouldn't have passed up the chance to take the shards from his legs.

Meanwhile, something inside of the cellar of the castle begins to stir and form together.

As they travel, Kagome stops and turns around, feeling the presence of jewel shards, turning they notice the whirlwind of air coming towards them. Inuyasha remarks about noting a disgusting scent as he looks towards it and flexes his claws. Kagome remarks about Inuyasha's sudden shift to anger. Inuyasha lunges to attack Koga, however Koga bounces right of his head and lands right down next to Kagome. He immediately goes to greet Kagome before Inuyasha steps up. The subject turns to Naraku, or in Koga's case it does, as he questions about Naraku, Inuyasha however questions back about Koga's reason for being there, before yelling at Koga to leave Kagome alone. Miroku pipes that they are also looking for where Naraku has hidden himself, before Koga questions about the abandoned castle. Inuyasha takes the time to try and gloat, remarking that he'd broken through Naraku's barrier. A shocked Koga doesn't know what to say at first, before he remarking that Inuyasha still failed in his attempts to kill Naraku. Koga continues that he would have defeated Naraku already if he'd been there, while Kagome tries to calm down a Inuyasha. There argument comes to a stop when both notice that Naraku's scent is nearby. Koga's allies arrive, remarking about something that came out of Naraku's castle, before the demon in question crashes through the tries.

Koga is surpised to see the demon, considering he'd been at Naraku's castle and had not noticed it before. The demon makes it's intentions clear, wanting the shards of the jewel. Knowing that Kagome has the shards, Inuyasha rushes in to attack, easily overpowering the thing, but the hair demon proves to be able to still try to grab for the shards that Kagome has. Koga rush in and grabs Kagome, yelling back to Inuyasha that he'll bring Kagome somewhere safe, while Inuyasha handles the demon. As Inuyasha is distracted by this, the hair demon detaches itself, falling down the side of the cliff. Miroku assumes that the demon fell, however Inuyasha knows the demon did it purposely, to get away so it could go after the jewel shards.

Koga picks up on this, accusing Inuyasha of allowing the demon to get away, before he lands down with Kagome in a small clearing.

Meanwhile, Inuyasha is on the run, rushing toward them, angered with Koga's stupidity in placing Kagome in danger due to the jewel shards. Koga now seems intent on fighting the demon, however Kagome requests that they go back to Inuyasha and the others. Koga assures her that he will protect her, Kagome admits that she appreciates that, but plans to go over the reasons why she wants to return to Inuyasha and the others, before the demon appears.

Koga rushes at the demon, and proves to be able to do a fair bit of damage, however the demon once more proves that it's mobility, again trying to make a grab for the shards before Inuyasha rushes in and blocks it. Inuyasha waste little time in asking Kagome if she's alright, before yelling at Koga for putting her in danger in the first place. Koga shoots back that shouldn't have allowed the monster to get away, before the demon attempts to eat Koga. Inuyasha tells Inuyasha to save Koga, but he doesn't show very much interest in doing so, but a little more encouragement from Inuyasha leads to him going in for the save, not willing to allow Naraku to get the shards in Koga's legs anyway. Inuyasha tries to attack, however his sword just cuts through hair, before hair wraps around his body, seemingly pinning him in place. The demon gloats about it's freedom from Naraku, and it's ability to hunt for the shards to reobtain it's original body. Inuyasha questions as the demon reveals that it, like the castle was left behind by Naraku when he left. Miroku deduces that the remains left behind must have awakened from Koga's jewel shards when he arrived at the castle. With this information, Inuyasha doesn't seem to surprised with how weak the demon is, and takes the moment to mock Koga for allowing the demon to get the better of him. However, Koga is already standing up, pulling the strands of hair away, and remarking that he was just going easy on him. Inuyasha scoffs, remarking that Koga is still making excuses before Koga steps forward and attacks the demon, bashing the top of it's head open with a punch. Miroku tells Koga to hold back on killing him, but Koga remarks that he'd held back with that shot. Koga questions about Naraku, however the demons reveals that regardless of their search, they'll never find him, he's in a place nobody can reach. Koga tries to press for a better answer, before the demon reveal it was seperated from Naraku before it could find out what Naraku was planning. Realizing that it's useless, Koga then decides to kill it. Taking pieces of the hair, he tells his allies to remember the scent and too give it to the wolves as well. Both Miroku and Inuyasha see this as a point attempt (more-so Inuyasha), Inuyasha remarks about his own sense of smell, and how if he hasn't found it, then there is no way the wolves could. However Koga is already next to Koga making his farewell, and promising to bring Kagome, Naraku's head as a present the next time they meet. (Oh yeah, that never happened.) Inuyasha leaps at Koga and tries to punch him, however Koga is already on his way off. Miroku comments that help from Koga would be beneficial to them, but Inuyasha isn't having it, he doesn't believe that the smell will lead them anywhere, certain that Naraku wouldn't be careless enough any remains of himself behind, unless he was certain he would not be found. Miroku agrees with Inuyasha's point, however he questions where Inuyasha's idea of Naraku's whereabouts is. Inuyasha refuses to answer, telling Miroku to come up with that answer himself. Kagome muses about all this information.

Elsewhere, Kikyo talks down a lesser demon around the area, in her search for Naraku, but her search also comes up with no clues, he's even hidden himself away from her. While she travels, she comes across a bandit, on the verge of death and now fearful of that the actions that he has caused throughout his life, will condemn him to hell. He remarks that he wishes to be saved, he requests that Kikyo bring a clump of hair off his head to that place for him, because he can no go to the place that is said to save the souls of even the wicked.

Kagome and Inuyasha relax as they look at the starts. Inuyasha remarks that their right back to where they started, even more bothersome after he'd manage to fianlyl break through the barrier. Kagome is confident that with everyone working to find Naraku, he'll be found, Inuyasha however perks up, immediately questioning if she was including Koga in that statement. Kagome questions back if he's still jealous about Koga, before Inuyasha angry denies that he isn't, before asking if they could chance the subject. Not long behind them, Miroku and Sango watch on with amusement at that situation as Shippo sleeps.

Kikyo comes across two villagers who tell her about the location of the place she is looking for, Mt. Hakurei. It's said that a Buddhist priest opened a temple there, that, when visited would purify the visitor of their sins. Looking ahead at Mt. Hakurei, Kikyo gets an odd feeling about it.

This arc is interesting, because, everything involving Kikyo in this arc, was greatly expanded in the anime series (ironically though the title has her name, it really has more to do with than bandit than herself), it had an entire episode dedicated to it, but considering that episode is pretty much a filler episode, I'll be covering it down the line when I work on the filler only episodes. As fillers go, it's not one of the best, but it has some interesting moments, of course, most of that episode meant little when we consider that the bandit was basically just all part of a plan to lure Kikyo to Mt. Hakurei (weird that they took the time to give the bandit development, but it did give some development to Onigumo, not bad as far as origins stories go, it's filler, but at least Sunrise seemed to try harder with this one, even if it's not perfect). This arc is even more interesting in that, the section with the hair demon, yet again takes place in filler episodes, the episodes it's in is notable for the introduction of Ayame, who despite having a limited appearance throughout the series, does actually make an appearance at the end of the series, so in that way, way to be consistent with one thing from your filler Sunrise. Some Koga development was a welcome edition as well. Once again, I'll cover that when I cover the fillers. Otherwise, the canon parts of these are shot-for-shot, with the filler around to pad everything into place.

It's always chapters that focus around the two show-offs, that make it difficult to talk about Kagome's actions. When it's one of the other, it's a lot easier because Kagome's able to be more active, but when it's Koga and Inuyasha, it's them trying to one-up one another to try and impress her, so usually everyone is left standing and watching as these two try to kill what their fighting and one another.

Koga and Inuyasha's argument is an interesting one, Koga does go and flirt with Kagome, but when he confronts them about Naraku, Inuyasha questions him if that was the only reason he came, Koga seems to pass off this, before Inuyasha angrily yells at him stay away from Kagome then, Koga just continues to press about his original question. When it comes to Inuyasha's emotions with Kagome, very little takes precedence, and that much is made known.

Inuyasha is noticeably more hot-headed in this arc, but then again, Koga added a lot of fuel to the fire. He flirted with Kagome when he arrived, which was a big part of it, but in one of Koga's more interesting appearances, he literally used Inuyasha as a stepping stone to get to Kagome, bouncing right off his head and right past him. Inuyasha tried to get one up on Koga, by remarking about the situation with Naraku, breaking the barrier and almost defeating him, Of course Koga actually gets the better of the exchange by remarking that despite this, Inuyasha still failed, and claiming in the same position Koga would have defeated Naraku. Finally, and this is two reasons in one, Koga placed Kagome into danger with his actions, though this was compounded by the fact that Koga ran off with Kagome, which probably ticked him off just as much. Of course, Inuyasha looked at it as himself once more doing all the leg-work, while Koga took the credit for saving and keeping Kagome safe. If only he knew that Kagome saw right through this, and wanted to go back to where Inuyasha and the others were.

Some will think, "Well, Koga did keep her safe, he took her away from the area." But Koga didn't think the situation through, the demon wanted the shards of the jewel. Kagome carried some with her, and Koga had them in his legs, as Inuyasha remarked, it was basically inviting the demon to go after them both at once, Kagome was in much more danger around Koga than she was away from him. However Koga was trying so hard to impress Kagome and look like the hero, he didn't quite think about the jeopardy that he was putting her in.

Koga is a pretty brutal guy when it comes to slaying, everyone within the group (sans Inuyasha) was shocked with how brutal he was towards the demon, even if it had been apart of Naraku, Koga took a bit too much pleasure in killing the demon.

There is a fair bit of irony that comes with the bit about Kikyo in this arc. I never quite understood the need for her to visit Naraku (having tabs on him was enough), since she always gloated in front of him, with the both of them, acting like their better than the other, and both walking away and doing nothing. In this case, she goes to look for Naraku, but Naraku doesn't allow it, he uses the bandit to ensure that Kikyo does come to him, and this time it's on his terms, and in that situation, he nearly ends up killing her. Of course the true irony is that Kikyo gave him the very power that he needed in order to nearly kill her and mortally wound her. Now that I think about it, this chapter actually does a pretty good job of showing a similarity between Kikyo and Koga. Koga tries to impress Kagome, but often his actions become a double edge sword, because he has tunnel vision, he wants to impress Kagome, how he does it, doesn't matter, even if it means putting Kagome in danger. Kikyo's plan has that same tunnel vision, she wants to defeat Naraku, how she does it, don't matter, even if it means putting everyone and herself in danger. Their so focused that their goals blind them to everything else.
