" there's drinks and music, no need to be a wallflower tonight. " she takes their hand without question and instantly begins moving toward the dance floor, where thriller plays loudly over the speakers. " c'mon, dance with me and i'm not taking no for an answer ! "
on october first, an announcement is made across socials, signs posted on the doors of the AMERICAN MUSUEM OF NATURAL HISTORY.
we will close early on october 31st for a private event.
a small package is delivered to the home of every guest - with little instruction but to keep face up on it’s label. once unsealed, what’s revealed is far from an ornate box, no gilded finery upon it’s edges, but rather simple burwood. small enough to be held in both hands, with a hinged lid that opens with some amount of pressure. beneath the box lies a simple thick bristled brush, tied with black ribbon. as the box within draws open, recipients are quick to understand just why the instructions had been given, for those who had failed to follow them are quickly met with sand spilling out around them. those who had followed the instructions read another at the top of the sand ‘brush away the sands of time’.
the bristled brush finds its purpose, and the recipients who follow the instructions brush away the sands and reveal a 14k gold scarab pendant beneath the sands. lifting it reveals an invitation for them and a plus one, to the dusk til dawn with the mummies halloween gala at the american museum of natural history. noted when one flips the invitation, in bold letters: costumes are obligatory.
the guests arrive to a red carpet before filing into the theodore roosevelt rotunda - beyond which thick velvet rocks block their path. waiters - no, mummies circle the room, glasses with sanguine wines upon their trays. the room fills in a short time, the sun’s light slowly falling away as dusk approaches. when the last name on the guest list is crossed out, each of the museum’s beloved elite within it’s walls - an announcement is made.
any are free to leave, now. but should they choose to remain - to pass velvet ropes and enter into the museum - the doors will lock behind them, no soul to pass the gates until dawn once they shut. but beware - for what lies within would scare even the bravest of souls. those who cannot face the terrors need only seek out the rooms marked with scarab’s for haven.
the brave enter and hear the thump of the doors slamming behind them. the guests are left in silence - the museum eerily quiet - before music begins playing, and they settle in, chatting amongst themselves and beginning to explore. the warning from earlier on hallow’s eve fade from recollection. as they explore, a dance floor reveals itself, along with several bars throughout the exhibit halls. music roars through the building as the guests drink their fill and explore the exhibits, some caring little for what damage they might do as a pocket change cheque could easily repair it and others drunkenly fixating on dinosaur bones. stumbling further into the museum sees the auditorium showing classic halloween films, with popcorn freshly popping.
midnight arrives with twelve, foreboding chimes, and without warning, everything changes. throughout the museum, several things occur all at once:
the music ends abruptly, the rooms flooded in darkness as the lights shut off - the wait staff having quietly slipped away moments before. screams ring out, before the lights flicker on and off - finally settling red.
from deep within the ancient egypt exhibit, creaking can be heard from the sarcophagi. their gilded designs shifting as the lids are pushed away and the dead rise from their resting places - arms reached out as they seek the living.
wax figures from behind glass seem to come alive, some banging upon their glass cages seeking exit while others step out from their enclosures.
pounding can be heard from the dinosaur exhibits, as the bones themselves seem to rattle in place.
while some choose to remain in the halls and embrace the fright, many scatter, some seizing the hand of their plus one or friends, in search of safe haven. the scarabs glow in the red light. those with the shortest path to the auditorium, the butterfly room, the space hall, and the dinosaur hall, previously transformed into a dance floor so guest could dance among the dinosaurs, will find the safety they crave first. but it isn’t long before all four rooms begin filling.
under the artificial blood moon, the event continues; there are still six hours until dawn.

dressed as 30s icon, fawn fits in more with the exhibitions than the guests. with ruby red dress needing adjusting with too much movement she's choosing to be still, now, instead of wandering she's assessing the potion's cart with interest. ❝ how many of those do you think are just water ? has to be some, right - just to keep it interesting ? ❞
