So I cant warn people that a book that was on many lgbtqia/saga sites for having poc gay characters that those characters were insulting? The city of Devi was a good story, but the way gay men and these men in particular were gross. One was a sex crazed, manipulative, raping, stalking creep who only discovered his sexuality by sleeping with a cousin repeatedly,(who is also a drag queen and is not very lovely described as well) but not written in a way where it's meant to be bad. It is written like it's normal for a gay men to be like that. That his whole community is like that and that his ex boyfriend is /different/ and shit, that one ends up marrying a girl btw. He is a great character that you learn to root for until his past is revealed and it's shit. It ends with the three forced into an unhealthy polygamous relationship and it generally left me with a sense of disappointment and discomfort. I think to have read that the author Manila Suri is gay himself and while of course there is gay men to avoid, abusive, mean, unhealthy. Yet I still cant help but feel like it was addressed to the community and I really didn't enjoy reading it. It ruined the book for me.
