spybrarian and i want to buy a cross stitch from you, but I don't really know where to find cool patterns or what sort of thing you'd like to be doing. We just know we'd love to add you to our Wall Of Art (and help you out with a bit of dosh on the side, for being such entertainment on our dashes). We don't mind how much shipping costs to NZ either, even though it's probably going to be insane.

What's y'all's fave fandom or animal or quote? Do you want something gothic, or cottagecore, or more artsy? A basic sampler-style thing but with a snarky phrase surrounded by pretty flowers or a geometric border? Or a cartoony-style character?

I can absolutely round up some patterns (or make one myself if you want something very personal/tailored) and shoot 'em past y'all.

Gonna toss on a couple pics of pieces I've done just to show the scope of what I can do with cross-stitching....

(obviously, if you want something real big and complex, it'll take me some time to finish and the price tag will be $$$. but you won't pay until i've finished the thing and actually shipped it out; i'm a firm believer in actually delivering on my commissions, so i never take money until i've actually achieved what was purchased.)

I have a very random question for you, a known Finn. How would you say 'pies, please' in Finnish? In circa 2005 (an age barely remembered by current man and lost to the mists of time) I and my friends were absolutely obsessed with Finland, care of getting into Finnish metal bands, and we started saying what we THOUGHT was 'pies, please!' in Finnish, and I don't want to write down the translation both because I'm sure it was so wrong and I'd have to remember how to spell it. But maybe a Finnish speaker could enlighten me...

Now, I could be typically terrible about this, as prank translations are a national pastime, and tell you it's something completely ridiculous and obscene, but I'll take the task seriously this time:

Now, the most direct and obvious translation, if you wanted to ask for pies in a more abstract sense, is: 'piirakoita, kiitos'. But if you wanted to be more specific, it changes a little (don't ask me why or how, our grammatical cases and their variations are a world-famous enigma). If you wanted to order, say, two pies, then it would be 'kaksi piirakkaa, kiitos' (and just one pie would be 'yksi piirakka, kiitos').

I hope that clarified at least a little. 😂

Do you think that Jade and Kit from Willow should get married? I just don't know where Elora would fit into that relationship, and I think Kit loves her too.

What do you mean "where"? Elora's an immortal queen and they live in a kingdom. She can keep tabs on them any time she wants.

By the way, please don't take the weirdness of my own OTPs as a reflection of your own OTPs. (For instance, my OTPs include a high-schooler who's a bio-weapons experiment, a dude who "fell through a trapdoor into hell," and a guy who doesn't even have a canonical first name.) I'm reading a lot of books, and so of course I'm coming up with a lot of OTPs. Very few of them are likely to ever end up being implemented as canon.

(It's really hard to keep track of these things because Tumblr doesn't allow you to thread-reply, but to address the above I had 2 OTPs in mind -- either Jade and Kit marrying and Elora being uncomfortable about it, or Elora outright forbidding it on grounds that her people are too inbred and Kit is too close a relation to Jade. I'm definitely not interested in a world where Elora meets Kit and has a fling with him because she thinks his facial features and personality are cute.)

So true. And yeah, last year’s The Life of Captain Marvel mini completely retconned her origin and did a hack job of it.

Nutshell version: Kree warrior Mari-Ell got sent to Earth on a covert mission and fell in love with a human dude called Joe. They had a baby together, who she called -- and I swear to god I am not joking -- Car-Ell, or Carol.

Mari-Ell, now going by Marie, abandoned her mission and committed herself to caring for her new family. This ultimately made Joe bitter because Marie was no longer the sexy space vixen he fell in lust with, so he became an abusive drunk and treated everybody in the family like shit, to the extent that Carol still suffers from PTSD as a result.

Marie then proceeded to do sweet fuck-all for the next thirty-odd years, because apparently her idea of being a parent is more about housework and baking than it is about, you know, nurturing and protecting your children and preparing them for the world.

(I mean, she’s supposed to be a sympathetic character. But then, so was Jason in Wonder Woman.)

Oh, and all this means that Carol? A character who has long been defined by her grit and determination and willingness to push herself to the very limit to get where she needs to be?

...didn’t actually have to try all that hard after all. Her Kree physiology means that she was always tougher and stronger and faster than the average human, even before she got her powers. Even her driving ambition to become an astronaut isn’t hers any more: her affinity for space is apparently written into her Kree DNA and something something destiny god I hate this comic so much.

So I was being very shallow looking at all your Armand gifs and going 'eh, not my type' but then you posted that gifset of him out of character and, oh gosh, he's very attractive. Can't believe I'm only into the non-vampire version of some guy lol. (this is such a meaningless comment, but i don't have anyone else i can say it to!)

Right? That's part of why I'm not really feeling how much they apparently deliberately toned him down for the first season and how unexpressive they've made him (especially in addition to the dumb contacts).

I know that it's also occasionally in character from both Armand himself and older vampires in general, but... it's really like someone just turned off the lights with the guy, you know? Which is not the first impression I would have wanted to make if it was up to me. You don't tone down Armand, you either let him enter the stage on his proper cue in his full glory – or if you insist on adding him there prematurely, you embrace it and find a way to make it work. Because this? Didn't really work.

Yes, I clearly still have Feelings and Opinions about this. 😂 But yeah, bottom line is, Assad is a cutie and it's a shame that Armand (so far) isn't.

NO ONE IN MY REAL LIFE KNOWS ABOUT THE DINOTOPIA BOOK WHERE SHE GOES DOWN THE RIVER!! I can't really remember any details but i remember she was VERY BRAVE and VERY STRONG and so was her DINOSAUR LADY. And there might have been a boy she had show up as a love interest with his dinosaur too? But pfft who can remember boys, when there are girls going on super heroic quests to find out why the rivers have dried up!

SO DUMB. What strikes me more than anything is that the Soska sisters have been handed a spy comic, led by Marvel’s premiere spy character, and they’ve decided that what they really want to do is write Lady Punisher.

And, god, the spy premise is staring us right in the face here! As far as the world is concerned, Nat is a dead woman. Now, living in the shadows, she is charged with carrying out the missions SHIELD can’t officially sanction. Superhero spy conspiracy action thriller things ensue!!

But the Soska sisters don’t even consider the benefit of being a ‘dead woman’ in terms of Natasha’s spycraft. They frame her apparent ‘death’ as giving her the ultimate freedom to murder people indiscriminately without any oversight: describing their approach to the character, they write, “we’ve always felt she’s been held back. Free from the Avengers -- and with the supreme freedom granted a ‘dead woman’ -- Black Widow is unleashed. No regrets. No mercy.”

The main problem with being a fan of comic book characters is then having to have a ever growing list of storylines and books that you just have to go ‘nope, doesn’t exist’

ahahaha yep. But it’s also kind of the glue that holds the Marvel and DC shared universes together in a way, isn’t it? The freedom of fans and pros alike to selectively ignore the stuff that doesn’t work for them and to apply their own interpretations to existing characters. It’s that capacity for reinvention and reimagining that gives us some of the best comic stories... albeit along with a lot of really shitty ones.

What's your nano about?

It’s a sequel to my paranormal noir Sorry, We’re Dead, which is set in an alternative 1940s and features a werepanther (Virgil Meriweather) and vampire (Warrenwick Gam) who are private eyes.

I’m calling this one Sorry, We’re Dead: Clover & Curses.

Currently in my NaNo:

A PLOT: Virgil is investigating a hex death of an old man to clear the name of a coven (led by his ex-fiancee) while working alongside the first vampire (and lady!) in the police dept., Lucretia Crux.

B PLOT: War is helping a mummy reclaim his funerary goods, which were taken by a snooty British archaeologist and are being displayed at the museum (an exhibit which opens in three days). Unfortunately, Pharaoh Khasekhem has suddenly disappeared, and War found a strangled dead guy next door…

C PLOT: Nora (War’s angel girlfriend) wants to help an orphanage in desperate need of repairs, and has grown very attached to a biracial girl named Pen who was trained as a pick-pocket (and whose dad turns out to be a familiar face…).

D PLOT: Stevie (War and Virgil’s human partner) and Lily (a huli jing) are getting married and things are getting crazy for them. A kitten is involved.

And what’s yours about???? I’ve seen tell of butcher birds and fairy tale vibes, which has me intrigued.
