drax && mantis

okay maybe i am behind the curve and everyone else has already processed this but it's my first time i guess

so many people think drax is the "joke" of the guardians (honest question: who is not the joke of the guardians??) and i've definitely rambled and raved about how much i disagree before (the guardians would not have had a chance against ego without drax's relationship with mantis, and he is the first and maybe only person to offer rocket comfort after groot's death)

but since i was thinking about mantis thanks to @hyperjorts ' ask earlier, here is also this:

Drax: Those pools, they remind me of a time… when I took my daughter to the forgotten lakes of my homeworld. She was like you. Mantis: Disgusting? Drax: Innocent. Mantis: Drax? There’s something I must tell you.

for me this originally read as a point of empathy. mantis reaches out to drax and she is overwhelmed by his quiet sorrow and the depth of his loss. she weeps with him. she has been utterly alone for her entire life with only ego as her father, her ruler, her god - but she is moved to betray him because of what she feels in drax, and how much his grief touches her.

and i think this is true. i think i have always believed that sorrow is the place where our ability to empathize with each other has the most potential to be powerful, and i think this happens here between mantis and drax as equals and as friends.

but i think another thing is also happening here. because until now, mantis - stolen from her home planet in her larval state and, as far as she knows, orphaned by her family (though she only knows this because of ego, and i'm not sure he ever tells her how she was orphaned, if ya know what i mean; im just saying that if he killed his river lily he sure as hell isn't wasting scruples on anyone else) - mantis has only seen fatherhood as manifested by ego. she only knows of fathers as those who make and then use you, who discard you when it benefits them to do so, who have no care for the loss of your life beyond their disappointment in their progeny.

she only knows of fathers who create mass unmarked graves of their children.

and here's drax, who has made his entire life into a memorial for his stolen daughter. who mourns her still. who loves her still. whose every breath aches with the loss of her, and the loss of all the things she had yet to do, to see, to experience.

in this moment, mantis doesn't just empathize with drax. she sees everything that fatherhood is supposed to be, and everything ego lacks. she sees her dead siblings not as fodder for their father's plan but as children who were meant to be loved, children who were failed by someone who was meant to cherish them, children who were lost to their own real mothers and fathers throughout the universe.

she touches drax and she knows how a person is meant to love their offspring, meant to love their partner.

and she know that ego has only ever murdered his.

and now, for maybe the first time, she knows that it's wrong.

drax is so important. drax is so important. he always has been. i fucken love both of these precious little babies so much

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY REACTING TO YOU GETTING AMNESIA:

PETER

Peter would be destroyed: it took him so long to realise that he loves you and seeing you not even recognizing him breaks his heart. "Y/n... It's me, Peter, your Star Lord." He tries to joke, a bitter smile in his face, but you look confused. "I'm sorry, I don't know who you are." You whisper, seeing his eyes filling with sadness. He shakes his head and reaches his hand to caress your face, refusing to accept this new reality. "No no, we'll find a way, you will have your memories back." He reassures you and you let him hug you, his touch incredibly familiar.

ROCKET

Rocket would feel like his world is falling apart: no one ever appreciated him as much as you do, no one even understood him in the way you can, and seeing you standing in front of him, not knowing who he is... It is simply too much for Rocket. "I refuse to accept this, Y/n. Look at me, you know me." He almost begs you but you look at him in confusion. "I guess I did, but I can't remember." You say, almost sorry to break his heart. He holds the tears back while running away from you, from the truth.

DRAX

Drax initially thought that this whole thing was a joke. "Oh come on, Y/n, you surely know me!" He says while opening his arms to hug you, but the look on your face makes his body immediately tense up. "You... You don't know me..." He whispers, his smile disappearing and his eyes filling with tears. You bite your lower lip. "I'm sorry." You whisper, understanding that he is in pain. He looks away and starts crying, wondering how is this even possible to accept.

GROOT

Groot would be shocked. He is about to hug you, as always, when you step back. "I'm sorry, do I know you?" You ask. He stumbles back as if you had just punched him, his hands still at mid air while he gasps. "I am Groot." He naively says and you frown. "I don't know how is that possible that I understood you, but no, I do not remember you." You say, feeling weird while you look at him. He shakes his head and his eyes gets watery in the moment he realizes that you forgot him.

GAMORA

Gamora loves you so much. She found her soul sister in you and hearing that you forgot everything, hurts her. "Hei, y/n, it's me. Do you remember me?" She asks while kneeling in front of you. You look at her, your heart pounding faster when she tenderly touches your leg, but your mind is blank. "I'm sorry. I don't..." You whisper and look away. Gamora tried to hold herself back untill this moment. "No..." She whispers and she starts crying, her hand squeezing your leg.

MANTIS

Mantis can perceive that something is different, but she wants to ask you anyway. "Y/n?" She calls you and you look at her, a stranger to your eyes. "I can feel you're confused. Do you remember me?" She asks and you raise an eyebrow, your hands shaking and you can't realize why. "No, I don't think I know you." You finally says and she looks down, her eyes watery and her fingers nervously entwining. "I see..." She whispers, a tear running down her cheek while she walks away, heartbroken and sad.

BONUS + YONDU

Yondu cares about you more than anything else, so when you look at him like he is a stranger, he is destroyed. "Kid, it's Yondu, you know me..." He almost begs you, his eyes scanning you and a tiny smile on his face. You frown and massage your forehead, more confused than ever. "I'm sorry but I've never seen you before." You sincerely say and feel sorry when his smile disappearing. He shakes his head and leaves the room, crying while he walks away.

Being Peter Quill’s sister and having a crush on Mantis:

Thinking Mantis is adorable from the moment you first meet her, but you don’t think anything of your feelings at first

Especially with your life threatened by your father and needing to defeat him, you don’t have much time to decipher your emotions

But after the battle against Ego, you get to spend more time with Mantis, and get to know her more

Being fascinated by her powers and how they work

Peter noticing you’re spending more time with Mantis, but, like you, he doesn’t think anything of it until Gamora points it out

“y/n and Mantis have been spending a lot of time together.” “Yeah, I guess.” “Does she… does she like Mantis?” “I don’t think… holy crap!”

After that, you constantly catch Peter watching your every interaction with Mantis like he’s studying something

Him picking up on how much you blush each time you see her, and how you perk up whenever her name is mentioned in another conversation

And he finally confronts you about it

“So… what’s the deal with you and Mantis, huh?” “Deal? What deal? There’s- there’s nothing going on between us!” “I freaking knew it!”

Peter immediately laughing at how flustered you are, which only gets you more embarrassed

And every day after that, Peter never fails to tease you after he sees you and Mantis talking

“Ooh, talking to your girlfriend?” “Peter, shut up before she hears! You’re so immature!”

All teasing aside, Peter does encourage you to make a move

Him constantly setting up moments where the two of you are alone so you can ask her out

But you always chicken out, or try to act smooth and end up failing

Mainly because Mantis doesn’t always pick up on your botched attempts to flirt with her

It becoming a whole team effort to get the two of you together, and the rest of the Guardians try and give you advice on how to ask her out

Rocket would immediately notice. "Wait, that hoodie is familiar..." He says while looking at you, you shrug. "Really?" You play dumb and he tilts his head. "Mmh, you can keep it, it looks good on you." He concludes and you slightly smile while looking at him.

Tell me who hurt you, I'll kill them." He says and you can't help but let out a soft laugh. He frowns at you sudden change of mood but he's glad he managed to make you smile.

There is no point in denying it since she can feel it too so you let yourself go and cry. She hugs you, her arms holding you tight while she caresses your head. "I'm here, it's okay." Yondu is pretty protective and hasn't much patience, so he would immediately whistle to call his arrow. "Okay tell me who made you cry." He tells you while looking at you, his eyes filled with affection. You shake your head. "There's no need to--" he doesn't even let you finish. "I hate seeing you like this." He honestly whispers while caressing your cheek. You smile at him and hug him, feeling his body immediately relaxing at your touch.
