Behold my husband's latest hyperfixation:

Manual typewriters

Okay, technically the one at the bottom right is an adding machine, but the rest are typewriters. And this isn't even all of them.

The oldest we have is hard to pinpoint, as he hasn't been able to date the ones on the lowest left shelf yet. But so far the oldest are the Underwoods (middle left shelf) which are both from 1928.

He used to collect old bikes (like from the 30s and 40s) and those were space hogs, expensive, and a bitch to work on. These are at least smaller, a lot cheaper, much easier to clean and restore, and are more useful.

My personal favorites are the larger Underwood and the blue Royal right above it on the left.

We're a normalcy deprived family.

All right, Tumblr friends, it is time for me to take advantage of your combined knowledge once again.

My daughter Joy has recently developed a fascination with antique typewriters, and would love to own one, but she wants one she can actually use, not one for display. I would love to buy her one, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg on it. So:

Any recommendations for a decent manual typewriter, preferably portable, for $100 or less? I've looked at some refurbished Royal and Smith Corona machines, and they're gorgeous, but all outside my price range. Is there anything within my price range, or am I going to have to just shell out the big bucks for this?

Oh, and it needs to be one where we can fairly easily get replacement ribbons and such, since it is something she intends to use.
