Debating between a TWSBI Eco and a Sailor Lecoule for a fountain pen that I could use my shimmer inks in without worrying about clogging (alas, my first Platinum Plaisir ... learned not to use shimmer inks in that one the hard way). Apparently the downside to the Eco is that it has a tendency to develop cracks, but then I've also seen reviews of the Lecoule that the nib is scratchy and it writes dry (not what I want for shimmer inks, and I hardly ever write with my LAMY Al-Stars anymore due to their scratchy nibs so I'm hesitant to get another if it has the same issue). Anyone here have any experience with either/both and can give advice?

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.

If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.

I've been on a murder mystery/English middlebrow fiction reading kick these last couple of months (with the occasional sci-fi thrown in as a treat), but they're starting to get repetitive. What fantasy books have you all been reading and enjoying this summer?

I don't blame anyone for not knowing this because it is very unintuitive but you must know that the employees at Home Depot, for the most part, do not know any more about home improvement than you. They were hired off the street, trained on how to operate the cash register and sell credit cards, and then sent out into the wild wild home improvement jungle. Now some of them do know things. It is essential that you understand that this is because 1) they are a bored retiree who used to do this for a living, 2) they are a hobbyist, or 3) they learned it from listening to the customers yap

That doesn't necessarily mean anything about their trustworthiness but like. If you need a surge protector to plug a large appliance into or something........ maybe do your own research

Even better, go to your local Ace/True Value/Aubuchon instead, because they will have staff there who know everything.

Mind, they will also have ignorant high schoolers working there as their first job, but! The high schoolers ought* to have been trained to answer questions with, "I'm not sure, let me ask ___ because she/he will know," and occasionally if the high schooler has been working there for a few years they will have picked up a surprising amount of knowledge and might actually be able to answer your question despite looking like a twelve-year-old.

Also your local independently owned hardware store is a great place to pick up town gossip and bump into your neighbors and chat about each other's current home improvement project.

*Not all managers train their new employees to say this when they don't know the answer to something, but the good ones will.
