TMA Character Aesthetic: Manuela Dominguez
manuela dominguez sketch. stan dark science ladys
I have SO MANY FEELINGS about Manuela Dominguez...
- She grows up with parents who use religion as a shield for their fears, and she blatantly goes against them to pursue a career in physics anyway. That is SO FREAKING BRAVE...
- She is competent, intelligent, and so intensely drawn to the cult of The Dark that it is both inspiring and heartbreaking in equal measures.
- She makes several GOOD POINTS, which I never thought I’d be able to say about a People’s Church devotee.
- She CREATES A DARK SUN through the combined powers of physics and faith. Science AND religion intertwined.
- She unabashedly CALLS GERTRUDE OUT for taking advantage of Jan Kilbride (in her written statement in “Dark Matter”)
- She breaks from her parents just to end up falling into an equally damaging (if opposite in ideology) religious extremism. She breaks the cycle only to be pulled back into it, and that character arc is extremely tragic; it makes me so sad... :(
When we meet her in “Heart of Darkness” she is broken and unhinged and terrifying, yet I just want to jump into the podcast to give her a hug...she has (1) her life’s work destroyed and (2) her certainty about who’s to blame broken to pieces in the matter of less than an hour. Then she gets TRAPPED IN HELEN’S NIGHTMARE CORRIDORS. And now she will turn up in the Archivist’s dreams, this haunted shell of a gifted and devoted woman, reliving the fall of the one thing she truly believed in...Every. Single. Night.
