Three Converging Lines

There are three different narratives in She-Ra that are told simultaneously. Now, I’m not talking about switching between points of view, like when it shows Adora in Bright Moon or Catra in the Fright Zone. I’m talking about three lines, all flowing together and converging at one point where those lines will become one truth.

There are three sides to every story: one side, the other side, and the truth. In this, we’ll assume that Adora and Catra’s are the juxtaposing sides, and the truth is us, the audience.

Each side is a perspective- this is basic knowledge. BUT if you notice- Adora’s narrative is very linear, very black and white and simple. It’s “The Horde is evil, the Rebels are good.” It’s “Catra is with the Horde, therefore she is evil.” 

Catra’s narrative is the exact same narrative, but underneath- think of it like walking on a sidewalk. It’s paved, it’s straightforward. But you’re also walking on the dirt, on networks of plumbing, pipes, and other masses of things beneath that.  It’s the inflection of certain words, the subtle glares, and glances, the unspoken dialogue beneath the actual dialogue. It’s the moral ambiguity of each precarious situation they’re thrown into and the complicated mess of feelings that come with it.

I’ll give some examples:

In Season 1, Episode 9, Adora’s stressed out over Bow and Glimmer being kidnapped. She puts her head in her hands and she’s about to cry. It’s straightforward.

Now cut to the episode in season 4 where Catra covers for Scorpia-- we don’t actually explicitly see what one would call a straightforward reaction, BUT, we get a closeup of her fist clenching around the supposed hard drive with Entrapta’s recordings. Yes, we do see Catra’s reactions first hand, but there’s an added layer even in the animation and sequence of events. 

Now, I am NOT saying that what Adora shows is all she is feeling. We obviously know there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. What I am saying is that even things as small as shot compositions are framed from both of their worldviews in mind.

And this is why they’re the core conflict of the show-- not just because they’re dumpasses in love, but because their worldviews are the very foundation of the way the story unfolds. It’s not just a perspective of one character- it’s the messy feelings and way their minds categorize and piece things together, their thought processes. 

And then there’s us, who are all dumb and gay and sobbing over the dumb of ass, pure of heart jock and the emo, scorned catgirl who loves her dumb jock to the ends of the universe and back.
