My completed flat file/plan chest unit. This is a piece of furniture I have wanted for years to store artworks/paper stock etc flat but they usually come at a hefty price to purchase (even second hand). Being the DIY nerd I am I decided to build one myself. It is definately a simplified version of what the market offers but I’m made up with the minimal aesthetic and it’s functionality. It measures 1 metre by 62cm so can hold anything upto A1 in size. It has 4 pull out shelves with a simple circle cut out for the handles. The bottom compartment has a hinged ‘push to open/close’ door which hides the timber base but also acts as a secret compartment 🤗 Of course it is mounted on castor wheels to easily manoeuvre. There is loads I could go into about the build process and my choice of materials/tools I used but I’ll save all that for a blog post sometime soon. I’m still deciding on a finish for it (paint/varnish/stain?) and the edges need banding also. The total cost came in at around £120 for all the materials which inc. timber, castor wheels, hinges & latches.
