A split between two Italian bands that I've come to enjoy here and there, Havah gets the A-side on this one with five tracks of darkwave influenced post-punk. Not so much a group as it's the project of Michele Camorani, who is probably better known for work in the screamo/hardcore outfit La Quiete. Having heard the previous couple Havah albums, which are worth checking out by the way, some of the tracks here are surprisingly upbeat...taking on a larger presence of melody than I've really heard on anything prior. Maybe some of the ice has melted, or rather this might have been a way for Camorani to unload some tunes that didn't fit that mold. Who knows, but no matter, I'm a fan of the work being done here with the minimal/thin tone but wrapping it in a dreamlike haze/dissonance. Something I'd certainly be up for hearing more of if he chooses to go in that direction. If not, hey...I was cool with the cold forlorn shit too. The B-side of this is housed by one long nineteen minute track called “Tartlas” by His Electro Blue Voice, that starts off like it's going to be a slow burn churn for a good portion of it, but actually quickly starts taking steps to escalate that into some rolling feedback and then allowing it to jump even further with the swirl of humming/buzzing squalls of electronics. Somewhere in there is some barked vocals by the singer, but the real show is just the mangled mess of noise accumulated here while being backed by a simple bass line and the path it weaves at its various stages, up until about the six minute mark where it essentially drops out and begins the climb all over again. Pretty relentless stuff that has little trouble drumming up interest for the duration of it. For whatever reason I don't really ever pay much attention to split LP's like this, I really don't know why, but I'm pretty happy I sat down with this one. Also dig the cover art, which reminds me of Last House on Dead End Street...although I'm not sure if that's what they were going for. I know the music certainly fits in that same area of sleaze/gutter life. Havah - Gelo (stream) His Electro Blue Voice - Tartlas (soundcloud) BUY IT!
