How would you compare Mulder's apartment to Scully's?
I am often left pondering, senselessly, at Mulder's dining room being right at the entrance. Is that normal for apartments? I find that odd and uncomfortable for some reason. But, I guess it's no different than the front door opening right into the living room.
I often think that Scully's apartment is bigger, but it may just appear that way because it is more of an open concept layout and white. This is in contrast to Mulder's apartment that is dark and divided by walls. He has an actual separate dining room while Scully has to use a section in her kitchen for a table.
They both seem to have sizeable bedrooms. I can't determine if Scully's kitchen is bigger than Mulder's because I don't remember getting a full view of his. Also, it's hard to determine how much more of Scully's apartment there is since we don't see if there is more. Of I recall, they both had sweat seem like half size fridges. Maybe they seem that way because of the modern monstrosites of today's refrigerators.
Is his living room the same size? Again, hers seems bigger because of the layout and it's bright, and it kind of blends in with the open concept and background of the hallway, kitchen, and sometimes open bedroom door.
Per the scale estimated by @mappingthexfiles's and @lilydalexf's excellent post here, one could make the argument that Mulder's place had more elbow room-- at least, it was more spaced out than Scully's (perhaps because he was shared it with Diana?) However, it would seem Scully caught up (and perhaps expanded) by Season 9.
It is interesting how well the set designers captured Mulder's and Scully's singular personalities with their layouts; but as for real world application.... I don't think either apartment maps particularly well onto real Virginian architecture.
