Forget-Me-Not
She pauses in the doorway
For the callback
That’ll never come;
They’re done acting.
And besides,
He’s already starting to try
To forget her.
There’s a little more vanished
With every mouthful,
And when he finishes the bottle,
She’s gone. The flowers
On the bedside table
Are wilting:
Their sky blue petals
Shriveling, and falling down
Onto the scratched wood.
He stares at the vase,
Trying to remember their name. They’ve been going in circles
For too long,
Stuck on a ride
No longer merry;
They just go-round,
Go-round,
Go-round
Until the horses unhitched
And they went tumbling
To the ground.
