Mabian has a lot of potential as a ship aka they are literally made for the "academic rivals" trope.
Imagine this:
Mara's studying hard, pulling all nighters, driving joy&kt insane by forcing them to quiz her on everything thrice. Asking her professors all manners of question on what they are going to be tested on.
She feels quite confident she aced it.
And then... she comes second place.
To Fabian Rutter.
She would be seething in the background, meanwhile Fabian has no idea.
He's running on two hours of sleep, he drinks 10 cups of tea/coffee just to keep himself awake, and most of his time in class is spent trying to solve a clue for whatever treasure Frobisher hid in that goddamn house 90 years ago.
That exam was a one time thing, because he hyperfixated on the subject in elementary school idk.
And she gets wierdly competitive which in turns stokes Fabian competitiveness and it goes on form there. Like full on one-sided rivarly that blows to full on rivarly and then idk... romance stuff happens.
The "Amber: It's Show Time" and "Mara: It's War"in House of Yesterday/House of Victory really highlights how each girl deals with the world and how they approach it.
I tend to fall into the Amber camp myself, with everything I do being a performance. But that's not to say that the Mara's of the world are any less valid <3
Mara: if you came to gloat, get it over with
Joy: you really think I would come here, when my friend is hurting, to gloat?
Mara:
Joy: well I didn’t come just to gloat
Actually wait fuck imagine being like...Mara in Touchstone. You're just about to graduate when you discover that literally the entire house except for you (And Mick) has been in a secret gang, some since Nina first arrived at school. And then you learn about the tunnels. THE TUNNELS, GUYS. Can you imagine living most of your teenage years in a boarding school only to find out right before it's time to leave that part of the house was built over an ENDLESS CHASM.
THAT IS A SINK HOLE WAITING TO HAPPEN.
*About 15 years later at an Amun graduation reunion*
Mick: *Looking down* Aw yeah I was wondering when you were gonna get that removed.
Fabian: Huh? Get what removed?
Mick: You know, those tattoos you got in highschool. Mara was telling me about them, and I mean, I always thought it was weird. Like, I get you guys all really got into that Egyptian stuff but I didn't expect Amber to get a tattoo of all people.
Sibuna: *Slowly looking at each other with nerves*
Mara: ...Hey, so...Mick, when I told you about that, there was a few things I myself hadn't known-
Mick: Oh! Wait-Are you telling me Victor got that upset at you guys for temporary tattoos?
Sibuna: .....
