🥂 drunken sin - what is the strangest thing you’ve done whilst drunk?

“I’m not sure what ‘strange’ means anymore, tell you the truth.” It’s actually more sad than strange, the more he thinks about it. “I, uh... I was on tour with my old company. We had a little too much to drink out, and... I went to that motel I was stayin’ out. Pretended the pillow was my wife.” His eyes nearly pop out when he sees the other’s reaction. “No, no, no, not like that- Jesus, not like that! I just mean... I talked to it, you know? The pillow. Said stuff I wish I coulda told Mara before I left.” He’s read all over, and he takes the longest drag he’s had from the cigarette since he’d first lit a couple of minutes ago. “Look, can we talk about somethin’ else?”

🍷 cherry wine - have you ever loved someone who causes you pain?

“She never hurt me. Never laid a finger on me, never been anythin’ but good to me. She and Ellie, they’re all the good I have,” he says, immediately jumping to his wife’s defense. And then he realizes that the question could be referring to someone else. It wasn’t that Matthew hurt him. It was more about the act of loving him and, subsequently, losing him in the way that he did. But he supposes it’s better for everyone he pretends that Matthew never happened to him.

🍂 cold dark earth  - is there anyone you would die for?

I can honestly say Jules would die for a lot of people if it came to protecting someone. But as a rule, or whatever, Jules would die for Ellie or Jamie.

💊 codeine - what is your favourite feeling in the world?

Getting to know someone. She loves to meet people, she loves learning about them however she can. Listening, learning, knowing. Something about it is so special to Jules.

do they have a short temper? what’s most likely to set it off? 

oh, no. maggie’s got a slow burn fuse. she likes to keep her resentment simmering underneath her skin. she rarely has outbursts. she prefers to nurse her grudges.

do they have parents / parental figures? do they have a good relationship with them? 

both of her parents are gone. before jonathan disappeared, she was close with him, and in the years following she liked to believe that she had a good relationship with her mother. they were never super close, but they loved each other dearly.

other parental figures include dadny, who has plucked margaret out of danger far too many times for either of them to be pleased about.

if they could control one thing in the world, what would it be? 

time. maggie wishes, always, for more time.

what is the closest you’ve come to death? 

she thinks about the question for a moment. there are poetic answers: with her father, the night gideon’s friend stopped them in the street; curled up next to jenny’s tree, at any point after that. she’s trailed the lake looking for edith and has lingered outside the cinema waiting for the strange man. maggie’s built most of her life around the curses of pleasance. but a more literal answer exists, filled with grief. “i found my mom,” she says quietly. karissa looked like she’d been asleep. she knows it’s not really the question---mara’s maybe looking for a near-death experience maggie’s had---but it’s the honest truth.

have you ever loved someone who causes you pain? 

“yeah,” she says. “i think all love comes laced with a little pain, you know?” she presses her lips together, glances back down at the wine glass she’s cradling in her hands. her last relationship had ended with infidelity, his hands in someone else’s hair. but love past the romantic, too---most of that had ended in pain. her mother, dead; her father, gone; her sibling, miles away. she glances up at mara, a wistful smile pulling at her mouth. “that’s how you know it was real.”
