MĀRAMA (2026) - Taratoa Stappard
A Māori, anti-colonial, and gothic horror film? This sounds AMAZING and I need Mārama to be released yesterday.
Far from home and haunted by visions, a Māori woman uncovers gruesome secrets inside an English manor. A bold, unsettling gothic tale of identity, memory, and colonial reckoning. (tiff)

That’s so amazing!!!
i am so insanely excited to watch Mārama because oh my god, a Māori gothic horror sounds absolutely incredible. it's set in the 19th century in yorkshire!! it was written and directed by a man who is Māori himself!! and there are a few showings available in my city but if i dont get better fast what if i miss my chance . . .
Yooooo! A gothic horror about colonialisation of the Maori. What?! It looks so atmospheric and I need to see it immediately!

Oni, Marama

[Sponsored by @mr-w-rambles, with a bit of a complicated pedigree. Akuma no Oni is one of the Big Bads of Legend of the Five Rings, with a very elaborate story line and a servitor species of mini-mes. The sponsor wanted me to take the physical appearance of Akuma no Oni and give it to an oni species envious of and devoted to hunting outsiders. But I had to also come up with my own name, because Akuma exists in Pathfinder, and his appearance (three eyes and seven horns) is a clear reference to Legend of the Five Rings. Folkloric akuma are also referred to as "ma" in Japanese, and are considered equivalent to the Buddhist mara. Mash those two together, I had a new name and was off to the races.

Oni, Marama CR 18 NE Outsider (native) This giant creature is vaguely reptilian, with a long lashing tail and clawed limbs. It has three eyes and a mane of shaggy hair grows between its horns and down its back. It is gaunt, with its rib cage visibly stretching the skin. It opens its mouth and three long prehensile tongues stretch forth, each one coated in liquid fire.
Most, but not all, oni form from spiritual envy for a form of humanoid life. Maramas are one of the exceptions—their target of envy is much more powerful, and as such maramas are among the strongest of oni. Maramas are envious of extraplanar outsiders, such as angels, demons or devils; they truly wish to be one of these creatures and since they cannot, destroy them. Each marama is obsessed with one particular lineage of outsiders above all others which it considers its sworn enemy. Rather than assuming the form of humanoids, their alternate forms are instead those of the planar scions—aasimar, tieflings and other creatures born of humanoid and outsider heritage.
Although maramas specialize in hunting outsiders, they are still lethal foes to all manner of creatures. A marama typically opens combat against an outsider with a dimensional anchor to keep them from teleporting away. They prefer to fight up close and personal, grabbing an enemy in their flaming tongues and tearing them apart with their savage claws and teeth. Against foes that keep their distance, a marama can spit a gob of sticky flaming mucus, or simply pepper them with magic missiles. Maramas function well as battlefield commanders, bolstering their allies with spell-like abilities, but they lead from the front rather than letting their soldiers do the bulk of the fighting.
A marama devotes its life to finding and killing outsiders, and when not engaged at that task often obsessively research their sworn enemies, trying to learn as much as they can about them. If they find a place where multiple outsiders congregate, they may lead a war party of mercenaries, oni and other monsters to conduct a mass raid. Maramas will gladly parley with humanoids if it suits their purposes, but those that summon outsiders, or parties that include planar scions as their members, are more likely to be attacked than befriended. They will even work with clerics or other divine agents on a temporary basis, so long as it gives them the opportunity to hunt their sworn enemies. The oni daimyo Akuma is fond of maramas, and employs one of them as his enforcer, assassinating oni who step out of line or fail him one time too many.
