There is no such thing as a “lazy slab”. I was at the corner of Gloucester Street when I watched a #dirtybomb explode on #BoylstonStreet seven years ago. I am not sure where Eric and Malcolm were at that exact, specific moment. It didn’t matter right away. After all, there were suddenly heroics afoot on the #MarathonDay in #Boston. Heroics now forgotten but for the few tales I love to tell. On that day, Malcolm rode pedicab with a speed and talent I have rarely seen since. #Doctors and #nurses had to get to the hospitals, quickly. There was no communication. It was an honor using my #trike to carve out clearance for Malcolm through the confused and panicking crowds of #KenmoreSquare. While many ran away from #Copley Square, desperate to locate their kids, their husbands, their friends, Eric flung his pedicab directly into the horrid destruction. He is an EMT. And an #EMT on a #pedicab was probably the most essential thing that day. Cars couldn’t move. Not that it was merely “difficult driving.” There was literally no place for cars to go. But Eric made it tot he center fast. There were a dozen score more little moments of heroism from the tribe out that day. Many were just small gestures. Some were vital efforts. All were essential to setting our attacked city back upright. They acted fast.
They acted smart.
They acted heroic. I am merely the storyteller to the day of the bomb. Which is why I love to honor and recall the brilliance of men and women too often overlooked. Small sidetones to a time when a proud city needed heroes at all levels. The #slabs (the Boston-local nickname for #pedicabdrivers) are not always the first thing most imagine when they consider what it is that makes #BostonStrong. But from what I recall, they are always and forever among the brightest, cleverest, and most resourceful in a pinch.
