By now day one of the @MarathondesSables should be done. The runners will all have had their first taste of the sand, the rocky river beds and the desert heat. By the sound of it some wind too. I'll never forget lining up at the start of that first day, running into the complete unknown, with nerves, adrenaline, fear and excitement all washing around. And then getting back to the tent after the first 30km stage was done. With a bit of relief to have the race underway but still plenty of trepidation knowing this was just the start. As it turned out I had the very best tent mates and one of the best week's of my life. I ran well, avoided blisters and enjoyed almost every minute of it. Almost. These are just a few snapshots of that race in 2015 and it still make my the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I look back. Simply one of the best things I've ever done. And I'm wishing everyone out there this year good luck, I hope they have the same experience I did. Just gotta keep putting one foot in front of the other and gradually you get through the sand into the welcoming arms of Patrick Bauer for a finishers' kiss. #mds2018 #marathondessables

Throwback to the rest day of the @marathondessables 2015 and what is undoubtedly my greatest running outfit ever. If you're in any doubt what a mess the MDS long day makes of you, then this photo should tell you what you need to know. By this stage I had been wearing my running shorts for 7 days without taking them off. Covering 100+ miles in the Saharan sun. I smelt as good as I look here. But what a week. Can't believe it's been two years since I picked up one of these. I can still remember very clearly the fear in the final few weeks as training drew to a close, the vacuum sealer came out, kit was weighed and calories counted. What makes the Marathon des Sables so different from other events is that most people are stepping completely into the unknown. I know I was. But that’s also the magic. Whatever happens in the Sahara sand you’re in for one of the best weeks of your life. Le 35ème #marathon des Sables début octobre Repoussée une première fois d’avril à septembre 2020, puis une deuxième de septembre 2020 à avril 2021, la 35e édition du #marathondessables devrait avoir lieu du 1er au 11 octobre 2021. Presque un millier de concurrents d’une cinquantaine de pays seront au départ. Les préparatifs vont bon train, selon le directeur de la course, Patrick Bauer, qui assure que cette épreuve respectera dans toutes ses étapes les mesures sanitaires en vigueur. M. Bauer s’est rendu au Maroc pour «tenir des réunions» avec les autorités de la ville d’Errachidia et de Drâa-Tafilalet, la région qui accueille depuis plus de 35 ans cette épreuve mythique. Dans une vidéo diffusée sur les réseaux sociaux, le directeur rappelle que l’ensemble des 900 participants inscrits à la course cette année seront vaccinés contre la Covid-19 et atterriront à l’aéroport d’Errachidia. Il affirme que l’ensemble des mesures sanitaires en vigueur au Maroc seront respectées par les participants venant d’une cinquantaine de pays. Pendant dix jours, en autosuffisance alimentaire, ces #aventuriers des temps modernes vont parcourir à #pied en six étapes environ 250 km à travers #dunes, #djebels, #ergs et #lacsasséchés. La 35ème édition sera animée par les valeurs qui ont toujours constitué la toile de fond du #Marathon des #sables, à savoir #solidarité et #bienveillance.
