In late December @seanharveymusic & I did a multi day road trip through West Texas. Sean described perfectly as ‘one of the most unique & American places I’ve been.’ Highlights included staying in Marathon Texas (population 400), the @chinatifoundation , Prada Marfa (checked that box), the ghost town of Terlingua (population 58), @bigbendnps & the rio grande, and Sean driving some 18 hours the last day. My 3 setups out at the Marathon Motel and RV park out in Marathon, tx! Left to right in first image Setup #1: explore scientific ed80 Apo triplet, qhy polemaster, stellardrive heq5 mount, zwo asi1600mm cool, zwo efw8, zwo oag with zwo asi290 mono mini, astrotech .8x reducer flattener all automated on my laptop using sgpro, phd2, eqmod and stellarium. This is my main setup, also I use a gso rc6 on this when I want to get a closer image Setup #2 (middle): standard photo tripod, omegon mini track lx2 and a Canon t1i and canon 24mm pancake lens using a remote shutter to take extreme fun widefield images Setup #3: ioptron smarteq pro+, canon T4i using the 200mm L f/2.8 and remote shutter to capture extra fun widefield images Marathon, tx is an amazing small town. It's a town devoted to astronomy about an hour north of big bend national park boasting some of the darkest skies. This place is what I would call a "sanctuary City" for dark skies and astronomers. Great food and some of the nicest and friendliest people I've ever met and not to mention very kid friendly! I would love to retire here one day. Where I'm setup was behind my hotel room properly named "Marathon sky park". If you're into the space whether you're an astronomer, astrophotographer, stargazer or anyone looking to see what true darkness looks like without all the hard work camping then I would suggest you put this city on your list of places to visit! Even if it clouds up you'll enjoy all what the town has to offer and I really can't say this enough, but everyone is so freaking nice! Driving through Marathon, TX, we found the world's smallest Target store in the middle of nowhere.
