We rescued him from the meat market today. Saw him trapped behind the bars as he was being purchased. I was so convinced he was someone’s pet - all that sadness that stood there. . Suki told the person buying him that he was stolen, our family dog that was taken. In the end she convinced them to release him. We brought him back to the shelter with an Asian Palm Civet, and a goat we rescued. . He is such a smart and amazing dog, I am certain he belonged to someone. Imagine what it must be like to be taken. To sit there awaiting death, and to know no matter what you do, you will never see the ones you love again. . Every year, over 10,000 dogs and cats are cramped in tiny cages before they endure barbaric deaths, and are cooked alive. . This barbaric 10-day festival in Yulin coincides with the summer solstice on June 21st. The Yulin Dog Meat Festival is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dogs killed for their meat, accounting for about one percent of the dogs slaughtered in China annually for meat. Around 10 million dogs are thought to be slaughtered yearly for human consumption in China alone, both bred for meat and snatched from the streets; street dogs and family pets alike have been found in the cages in some dog meat markets. The importance of fighting to introduce legislation is to focus on efforts that combat the year-round dog meat industry rather than this sole annual event. . . As a transport left carrying dogs, it was intercepted - the animals liberated, and sent to the foundation’s shelter with Suki in Changsha. . Like most survivors, she could barely walk. Legs crushed, and parts of her skin torn off. While it has taken some time for her journey to start, she came to America two weeks ago with thirty other dogs. . Her chance. A place to breathe. They were being held in a cage, legs #broken so they could not escape. . I stole them on my way out of the facility. Took them - because life itself is not property. . Currently they are being treated at the vet, and have successfully made it out of surgery. One had a fracture. The other, breaks in both front legs. A missing #eye that was pushed into his face. .
