Louis Theroux: I texted him [Marcel Theroux] and I said "What d'you remember about Helena?" and he said: "She sat next to me in the choir, was very beautiful, dressed like a Pre-Raphaelite milkmaid."

Helena: [Laughs]

Louis: "Pretty rad for 1983, and blew everyone's mind when she played Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, she was so good. Also, she was nice and approachable."

Helena: Aw, thank you.

Louis: So that was his recollection. Do you remember being in Pygmalion?

Helena: Yeah, it was great, cause I just walked straight into the part, I didn't even have to audition. There were no other women who wanted to act it. It was almost like "PLEASE will you play Eliza?" and I said "Yeah! It's a great part."

On pratiquait l’élevage de chiens pour la fourrure et les voyages. Les saumons faisaient clapoter l’eau et il y avait des crabes comestibles aux pattes de trente centimètres de long. J’ai vu des phoques, mangé du morse et observé des baleines bondir hors de l’eau verte et froide de la baie en soufflant de la vapeur d’eau. Rien de stérile ou de pauvre sur ces terres. Et nous étions au bord du cercle polaire arctique.”

Here’s my alternate take on the cover to Marcel Theroux’s 2013 sci-fi thriller, Strange Bodies.

The book hinges on the idea that someone has developed a process for reincarnating dead people using their writing as a way of mapping their thought processes. In the main plotline, Samuel Johnson is reincarnated in present-day London after his essays, novels, personal journals, and dramas are put through what the author ominously calls The Process. The protagonist is then called upon to confirm that the newly-made man is indeed Samuel Johnson through handwriting analysis and literary comparison. 

Because of how The Process works, I wanted the cover to have a strong tie to pens, handwriting, tattooing, and continuity. That’s why this cover is all drawn with one line, and why it’s a little messy, a little human. Anyone who’s in a new body has a specific tattoo - that’s why I inked this cover in someone’s skin.
