17 years ago (2005), on this day (March 5), Johnny Depp attended Hunter S. Thompson’s Memorial at the Hotel Jerome, in Aspen, Colorado.

On that day, 150 people among Hunter’s closest friends and family, gathered in a private memorial service to remember the writer who committed suicide two weeks prior that day, on February 20, at his Owl Farm in Colorado.

The event took place at the hotel’s ballroom which was decorated the way Hunter liked. There were dozens of Hunter’s photos, on the stage was placed a giant American flag and in front of it, a life-size black-and-white photo cutout of Hunter. Next to the doorway, a sign written “Thompson for Sheriff” was placed in remembrance of Hunter’s almost-successful 1970 bid for elected office. There were also colored banners with the word “Gonzo” hung on the walls forming the famous Gonzo symbol consisted of a handle of a sword topped with a fist. There was also a television screening the 2003 documentary “Breakfast with Hunter”, the tables were all decorated with Mardi Gras beads, women underwears and tubes of red lipstick, and the guests drank Jell-O shots spiked with gin. The tribute event lasted at least 6 hours and was attended by Johnny Depp (who took the weekend off from the filming of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest” , made a speech and read a passage from the 10th Anniversary Edition of Hunter’s Book “Gonzo Papers, Vol. 3: Songs of the Doomed: More Notes on the Death of the American Dream”); and the actors: John Cusack, Jack Nicholson (who paid tribute with two hand-drawn portraits), Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Hartnett and Bill Murray (who did a stand-up comedy show)
