By early morning the weather cooled down and it was raining constantly by the time the first buses carrying refugees arrived at the border. Germany had opened its gates before, during the change of regime in 1989, and thus has already become a symbol of safety. Like the people from Eastern Germany who were feeing to Germany through Hungary at the time, the refugees, although being tired and in spite of the heavy rain, crossed the border with the feelings of freedom and relief.

Kora reggelre hideg lett és folyamatosan esett, mire a menekültek első csoportjait szállító buszok a határhoz értek. Az 1990-es rendszerváltáskor megnyíló és már akkor is biztonságot jelképező Németországba Magyarországon át igyekvő keletnémetekhez hasonlóan a menekültek többsége fáradtan, de a zuhogó eső ellenére is felszabadult hangulatban lépte át a határt.
