Me realizing that Charco might not retain their European Champion title because of FBC
my 2026-27 grand prix final predictions: Ice Dance
I Would Be Surprised If They Are Not There:
🇫🇷 Laurence Fournier Beaudry/Guillaume Cizeron - I'll admit to not liking them but without major mistakes FB/C will undoubtedly win gold in almost everything. Separating art from the artist, they are master technicians and while the revival of the Golden Waltz will be a huge wrench and might really shake things up, I expect them to do well with it. But as it stands, GuiLo's probably going to make it to the GPF and win it.
🇬🇧 Lilah Fear/Lewis Gibson - Lilah and Lewis have something to prove with their Olympic & Euros performance, as well as the Worlds call that kept them off the podium. Lilah and Lewis are so polished and while Lilah can definitely improve her skating skills, i think people over exaggerate how "poor" her skating quality. I can see Lilah and Lewis struggling a little with the Golden Waltz, but they're always very well trained and perhaps they'll excel at it.
🇮🇹 Charlène Guignard/Marco Fabbri - Guingard and Fabbri are so skilled and very artistic but I'll admit that I feel like they're lacking a bit of charisma on the ice. Kinda hurts me to say, but I can see Guignard/Fabbri being the Gilles/Poirier to GuiLo's Bock next season, as they're kind of the last two teams from the last generation left. I can see them PERFECTING the golden waltz.
🇺🇸 Emilea Zingas/Vadym Kolesnik - MY FRENCH ALPS OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS LET'S GO!! I adore them, and they have an aggression that sorely lacking in the id field. I appreciate that they have a different style to them compared to other IAM teams thats more story driven. Bolero's gonna be very interesting on them since story telling is their strength, but Bolero's just very repetitive. Emilea being a very new ice dancer might hold them back a bit with the Golden Waltz but their coach, Igor, is a master technician and considering how they do two full runthroughs everyday, I can see them making it work.
Very Likely:
🇪🇸 Olivia Smart/Tim Dieck - everyone's favorite non spanish spaniards! They're always held back by their rhythm dance, it always feels kind of kitschy? but their free dances are gorgeous and cinematic and I can see them doing well, especially if the outrage around Ice Dance's wait your turn mentality leads to a change in judging this next quad. Excited to see them do something other than Dune.
🇫🇷 Evgeniia Lopareva/Geoffrey Brissaud - Zhenya and Geoffrey are fantastic ice dancers who should be competing with the new generation of ice dancers like Lilah/Lewis and Zingnik. Unfortunately, international judges and the French Federation seem to be holding them back so GuiLo can be the undeniable top team. Either way, Zhenya's just the coolest and i love their unique and very French programs.
🇨🇦 Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier, 🇱🇹 Allison Reed/Saulius Ambrulevicius, & 🇺🇸 Madison Chock/Evan Bates - Piper & Paul and Bock would be locks and I would put Saulison with Smart/Dieck & Lopareva/Brissaud if I wasn't pretty confident all three are retiring. I can see Bock pulling a Nathan Chen and never officially retiring, and I thought Piper and Paul might do another season to help Canadian ice dance and to do a farewell season but Piper just accepted a full time coaching position so now I am expecting retirement.
Saulison was always an underrated team, i get that they had a lower ceiling than the other two, but they showed a lot of consistency this season and I really liked their technology themed programs. That being said, Allison's hinted heavily at her own retirement, maybe Saulius will keep going, but I'm pretty sure Allison's done. I'm excited to see what she'll do next! Maybe she'll join her sister and help develop ice dance in Japan or maybe she'll live her best life across Europe and North America.
I'm gonna miss her Allison's chaotic country hopping, Piper and Paul's quirky programs, and Bock's polished and conceptual programs and their fantastic lifts.
Decent Shots:
🇺🇸 Christina Carreira/Anthony Ponomarenko - CPom are gorgeous skaters and like Zhenya & Geoffrey, they feel underscored to push their domestic rivals to the top. (though it's not as egregious as Zhenya's and Geoffrey's) I loved Perfume and they really excel with these gothic romantic programs. They're very underrated and i think they're going to have an interesting domestic (friendly!) rivalry with Zingnik this quad.
🇨🇦 Marjorie Lajoie/Jean-Luc Baker - Woo! I'm sososo excited for LaBa! Marjo is an insanely good ice dancer and Jean-Luc is no slouch either. I put them here because we haven't seen again from them yet but they are amazing ice dancers and can definitely be the top Canadian team this quad.
My Dark Horses For Making It:
tbh dance is so corrupt hierarchical that I don't really have "dark horses" but I had to choose, Davis/Smolkin or Lauriault/Le Gac.
🇬🇪 Diana Davis/Gleb Smolkin - Davis and Smolkin have improved so much since their debut, but I feel like they've start to plateau a bit? Either way I like their how free dances are in that classical Soviet/Russian style.
🇨🇦 Marie-Jade Lauriault/Romain Le Gac - insanely creative lifts (the neck lift? hello??) a lot of ice dancers can be described as "quirky" but Lauriault/Le Gac managed to combine French weirdness with a bit more edge and alternative sensibilities. A lot of the time in ice dance, the women are performing for their lives while the men are also there but I appreciate that Romain tries very hard to be a performer while doing these crazy lifts.
NGL i only started watching ice dance regularly post Pyeongchang and seriously during this quad, so I don't have much experience with the pattern dances! I think the ISU bringing them back is meant to make the sport more technical and to make judging clearer to avoid the outrage regarding how Ice Dance has been scored this past season. I'd love to hear the opinions of a more informed fan and I'm really excited to see how it'll shake up the hierarchy.
twizzles may be fake but yuna kim's laybacks are real, and that's great way to end my GPF predictions!
