openly queer figure skaters at the 2026 winter olympic games, for pride month

there were seven openly queer figure skaters at the milano cortina games—six men and one woman. two of these skaters are singles skaters, one of them is a pair skater, and the other four are ice dancers. here's a bit about all of them!

paul poirier

paul poirier is an openly gay ice dancer from canada. he and his skating partner, piper gilles, are the 2026 olympic bronze medallists, three-time world silver and two-time world bronze medallists, two-time four continents champions, and five time canadian champions. paul also has a sixth canadian championship with former partner vanessa crone.

filip taschler

filip taschler is an openly bisexual ice dancer from czechia. his skating partner is his sister, natálie taschlerová. they are three-time czech national champions and two-time four nationals champions. they came 15th at the 2026 olympics.

guillaume cizeron

i don't want to talk about this guy either. he's french, he won the olympics, both he and his partner are shit. instead, let's talk about someone else, who wasn't at the olympics, but deserves the recognition more.

guillaume cizeron gabriella papadakis

gabriella papadakis is an openly bisexual retired ice dancer from france. she is the 2022 Olympic champion, a 5-time world champion, 5-time european champion, and 7-time french national champion. she is an advocate for same-gender ice dance, and has recently written a book, 'pour ne pas disparaître'.

kévin aymoz

kévin aymoz is an openly gay singles skater from france. he is a seven-time french national champion, and came eleventh at the milano cortina olympics. he is also a nine-time grand prix medallist, one of which was a bronze medal in the grand prix final in 2019.

lewis gibson

lewis gibson is an openly gay ice dancer from the united kingdom. with his skating partner, lilah fear, he is the 2025 world bronze medallist, a four-time europeans medallist, and a seven-time british national champion. they finished seventh at the milano cortina games.

filippo ambrosini

filippo ambrosini is an openly gay pairs skater from italy. with his skating partner, rebecca ghilardi, he is a two-time europeans medallist, the 2024 italian national champions, a five-time grand prix medallist, and finished 12th at their home olympics. as of the 2026–27 season, he will now be partnered with finnish skater milania väänänen.

amber glenn

amber glenn is an openly pansexual singles skater from the united states of america. she is the milano cortina olympic gold medallist in the team event, a three-time US national champion, the 2024 grand prix final gold medallist, and a two-time world team trophy winner.

WELL.

let’s start with a brief trigger warning for: mentions of sexual assault

strap yourself in and lace up your skates we’re going to talk about Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron.

The main thing to be said about these two starts simple and ends up extremely complex. Simply put, this is their first season competing as a pair. However this is not simple, in fact, it’s completely unprecedented and unheard of. In short, it just doesn’t happen. Most pairs at this level have been skating together upwards of a decade and with most skater being in their twenties this becomes the majority of their life up to that point. When talking about Beaudry and Cizeron figure skating alums are struggling to express just how unprecedented this is.

But why has it happened, and who were their previous partners?

Previously Cizeron competed with Gabriella Papadakis

These two set incredible records in the decade they skated together holding the claim to most world records broken in the sport, along with continually breaking points barriers in multiple disciplines.

For Beaudry she previously competed with Nikolaj Sørensen

While their career was not as illustrious as that of Papadakis and Cizeron they did pick up Bronze Silver and Gold in the Canadian Championships over the course of five years and three appearances. Along with one Olympic appearance where they placed 9th. At some point during this time they also began a romantic relationship.

Why did the partnerships of Papadakis and Cizeron, and Beaudry and Sørensen break apart?

Starting with Papadakis, there were multiple and multilayered reasons for her leaving high level competition, some of which she has begun to be open about since around 2022 when documentary  Le couple de feu “The Fiery Couple" dropped and she revealed that she became pregnant just before the 2019 worlds and since reported her coach told her "deal with it and come back." Leaving her feeling that her only option was to have an abortion. She has recently released a memoir titled Pour ne pas Disparaitre “So as not to Disappear" just this January that I have yet to read. In it she discusses having a miscarriage during her and Cizeron’s performance at the 2019 worlds, along with expressing feeling controlled by Cizeron, and fear at the idea of being alone with him. She was set to be commentating at Milano and Cortina this year, but since the release of her memoir Cizeron has spoken out about a possible defamation lawsuit in response along with a cease and desist, in just January Papadakis received a call saying they had changed their minds about having her commentate this year.

She is also now championing same sex partnerships with skate partner Madison Hubbell in figure skating with an aim to make the sport a more open place for women and to address the power imbalance in pairs skating.

Now for Beaudry and Sørensen, their split was caused by a ban on Sørensen from Skate Canada due to him being investigated in 2023 for sexual assault allegations put forward by an American coach and ex skater. As far as my personal knowledge goes this coach’s name had not been released, the alleged assault happened in 2012 and in America. That last point in location is important as, after an appeal on jurisdictional grounds, Skate Canada overruled the ban in 2025.

Sørensen denied the accusations and Beaudry has continued to stay with him in a personal sense, but was left lacking a skate partner in the run up to the most important skate season.

Now because the figure skating world is so small Beaudry looked to her and Sørensen’s mutual friend Guillaume Cizeron who was also without a partner.

So in March 2025 she announced she would skate with Cizeron with the hopes to go to the Olympics. She obtained French citizenship and in October that year they skated at the Grand Prix, an event that in Olympic years is seen as a predictor as to how they will place at Olympics. They placed second behind American married skate couple Maddison Chock and Evan Bates.

Within that second place skate however Beaudry and Cizeron broke a personal record whilst competing against a two point deduction after a fall caused by Beaudry’s skirt becoming caught in her legs. It begs the question what would they have scored had they not fallen, and should they skate clean in the Olympics could it secure them a gold?

There’s a lot that could be said about the French skaters as people given the external drama surrounding them, but their skill in the ice can’t be denied.

For those interested in medals for the Ice Dance my opinions and predictions (so long as nothing wildly dramatic happens) is that Americans Chock and Bates and French Beaudry and Cizeron will be competing for those Gold and Silver positions while the Bronze will be fought out by Piper Gillies and Paul Poirier of Canada and Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson for Great Britain (who as the underdogs with a Scottish routine and me as a Scot I am personally rooting for)
