Me, consulting my last two braincells: the ex husband and the future wife
You know, I’m watching that scene where Marcus confronts Bernie about her affair, and I can’t help but think about the scene in Love Actually where Emma Thompson confronts Alan Rickman about his affair.
Emma Thompson says “Yes, but you’ve also made a fool out of me, you’ve made the life I lead foolish too.”
And like, UGH. It breaks your heart a bit. And I think it can very much be the dynamic between Bernie and Marcus. The whole episode Marcus takes pride in showing how well he knows his wife. After 25 years, how could you not? To then find out that not only has your wife not been faithful, you have somehow missed one very crucial thing about your wife. The person you’re supposed to know better than anyone else. Marcus, in a very short amount of time, starts to wonder if any of it was real. All the love he has for Bernie, for their children, for making their marriage work despite extenuating circumstances, for trying to raise their kids not to hate their mother, for keeping the front porch light on waiting for Bernie to come home, for spending most of his marriage sleeping alone…was it worth it? Marcus values the life he’s built, the one he thought he built with Bernie. Except now she doesn’t want that life, maybe she never wanted it. How absolutely devastating it would be to learn that it all might have been a lie?
And don’t get me wrong, I love Bernie, I’m glad she finally figured out what she wanted and ended their marriage. But it doesn’t change the fact that she made a fool out of Marcus, and made the life he led for 25 years foolish too.
Marcus confronts Bernie about her affair in “The Coward’s Way” aka one of my FAVOURITE Bernie scenes EVER...
👀 (stares respectfully)
I knew I'd get this one after posting those snippits 😂 👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please! I'm not sure if you want the 7k 🥵 one or the wip about Bernie 'whoring' herself out as a trophy wife to see her kids' but I'll give you the latter and just leave you hanging for the other because... hun there is NO plot there what so ever. It's just raw sweaty unadulterated vigorous passion with leopard print silk scarves thrown into the mix.
The currently untitled fic: Basically, its set right after the first Berena kiss except Marcus never told the kids that Bernie cheated on him. They still aren't really talking to her because she's the one that initiated the divorce but thats fodder for later in the fic. Marcus is in a bit of a situation because he has been named in his mothers will to receive all her money and the house, however, his mother is a strict traditionalist and one of the conditions of the will is that Marcus must not be divorced. He shows up at the hospital for a case that he's specialising in and long story short, he gives Bernie 2 options. Go back with him or never see her kids again. Unfortunately, Bernie knows what power Marcus holds over the children having been there for them throughout the years whilst she was off with the army and she caves to the manipulation. This is basically a 'Marcus is who Cam got the psychopath gene from' fic. Ask me about my fanfiction through emojis
Ooc
mannn I want a thread with Marcus so badly now...I can see him getting mad about how ‘easily’ she can say their son died and how flippant she’s being (because she is numb, in shock, disassociated as hell, what ever) and she just eventually snaps back something like:
“What difference would it make now?! Not saying it doesn’t bring him back Marcus! If there had been anything I could do to...don’t you think I would have done it?” “I don’t know Bernie...you were there, with him, and you didn’t. You didn’t save him did you Bern? Thousands of strangers lives...and the one...the one life that should matter the most Bern and you let him down...again. Because that’s what you do.”
After watching last nights Holby again.
A lot of fans are saying Bernie was selfish for not telling Cameron sooner (to an extent, I can agree with) but nobody is blaming his father Marcus? If Marcus has known then why did he not bother calling the prison? I mean we can assume he’s washed his hands of him (which I wouldn’t blame) but it’s still all a bit weird to blame it on the one parent.
I was happy to learn that Charlotte had known despite her not telling him either. (Just shows the ‘darling Charlotte’ thing is genuinely canon). I think she’d be about 24/25 now? She’s been through so much over the two years it would of been interesting to meet her just once. However I can rely on tons of fics to cure that wish.
I also feel like the writers took the cowards way out. I do think he should of gone back to prison to rot for the remainder of his years.
Very glad Henrik survived. His character is my favourite right now despite some of his choices as of late, his character has always been a favourite of mine.
I can’t help but feel like the Cameron ending was a knock off version of Henrik/his son.
I was never invested in the Cameron going killer thing as it didn’t make any sense.
Looking forward to the ending of the Jeni storyline which seems to be coming up.
Holby City S21 E08 - Never Say Never
Wow, lots happened in this episode!
Yay for Zosia’s return. She always brightens up the screen, so delighted to see her back for a bit. Pretty surprised no one noticed her stomach before her announcement at the end, especially Dom - and I must just say that I was really happy to see their reunion play out on screen. He was so deliciously excited, it was joyful! Also, whilst I was never a Jasia shipper, I did find it amusing that Jac began the episode by acting a little like a spurned lover upon Zos’s return. Glad we cleared up why she was so annoyed by the end though, I know Jac doesn’t really need reasons to be snippy, but I do like it when we understand her motivations.
I really, really have to say, please NO! to a Cameron and Chloe pairing. Just... no. And I’m getting a little sick of Cam’s digs at Bernie. It’s like she was a single parent family. Never a word about Marcus, and he didn’t come across as an unmotivated medic, so I’m sure he might have encouraged Cam to do his best also. But no, let’s get as many digs as possible against Bernie. And WHY would he imply he would air all her dirty Holby laundry over a drink with Chloe too? Bring back the old Cam. This one is a total tool. (Also, he asked if Chloe actually chose to work with her Mum like it was weird. Yet he chose to work with his at one point too.) Continuing on Chloe for a minute (and I still don’t like her, although she wasn’t as unpleasant this week as she has been), what was that whole scene with the newborn? I can’t remember a scene of recent which felt more out of place than that one did. I get they needed something like that to further the Holly story, but sheesh! Weird.
Xavier and Donna. Oh my goodness, how tedious! He acted like a petulant brat, and she got her knickers in a twist about a pair of pants and some supposedly subliminal message they were giving about her being treated like a slave. This all predicated on the fact that he’d left the pants there for her to pick up. Who says he didn’t leave them there to pick up himself later? It amuses me that she thinks she can change him. We all know how that goes.
Holly. Well, I have a lot of opinions about this storyline, and I won’t go into them in too much depth here. But what on earth is the point of the mother going to the press? The only reason I can think is to try and strong arm the NHS into paying for Holly to be transported to the US. And in what universe is it reasonable to expect the NHS to do so? Perhaps if it were a tried and true treatment, but not to some untested and quite possibly fly-by-night charlatans. I’m not saying I don’t understand Holly’s Mum’s desire to hold onto hope, but to try and force the NHS into wasting thousands on a lost cause, makes me furious.
Finally, and this is a little bugbear really, but the elevator scene when Jac confronted Hanssen really annoyed me - firstly, as CEO, Hanssen should have stepped out of that lift because a) then the waiting patients wouldn’t have been kept waiting, and b) the discussion about Petrenko’s private situation wouldn’t have been had in public. I understand that him trying to close the lift doors and Jac keep opening them was supposed to be humorous, but for me, the humour totally missed the mark and just descended into annoyance!
Everytime I rewatch old Holby Eps I hate Marcus Dunn just a little bit more!
