i think the only "deduction" on the spot that Euros did was say "oh, you had sex?" when Sherlock played the Irene theme (which isn't even true, at least not with Irene, but whatever)

Right, thank you! That bit slipped my memory (or I deleted it because Sherlock was once more forced into a conversation about sex that makes him clearly uncomfortable by someone he doesn’t trust, yikes). But even that wasn’t a proper deduction, was it? For one, we don’t learn how she does it, but the explanations are essential to the viewer understanding Sherlock’s and Mycroft’s skills. It is even unclear, to an extent, what her conclusion even is. I think @artfulkindoforder mentioned that they read it as her deducing that he hadn’t had sex because she recognized the longing in it? I think there might be something to that reading, but other people mostly seem to interpret it the other way around.

And let’s say she correctly “deduced” him there in whatever way, I think learning about a person and their experiences through their art is probably less deductive reasoning in the Holmesian sense and more a skill requiring intuition, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Which yes, is absolutely a type of smartness, but not really what I think Mycroft is talking about. Also, now that I think about this, it seems to be pretty epically contradictory to her characterisation (such as it is) throughout the rest of the episode. Huh. What’s up with that.
