Once a proud three-master: the wreck ‘Mariann’ in the Wadden Sea off Sylt

The ship was launched in Denmark in 1903 under the name ‘Britannia’ and sailed across the Atlantic for half a century as a cargo ship, originally designed for grain. Then the slow decline of the sailing ship began.

In the years following the Second World War, it initially lay idle in a Swedish harbour. Until a group of artists from Sylt discovered the forgotten three-master in the early 1960s and made plans for its resurrection: The unmanoeuvrable ship, renamed “Mariann”, was then towed to Sylt. A floating tea room was to be set up on it in Munkmarsch harbour. But the authorities refused.

The old sailing ship was sold again and taken to the mudflats off Braderuper Heide, this time with the aim of turning it into a venue for cabaret events. But this dream also failed. Private parties were then held on the stranded vessel from time to time - until it burnt down in 1981. The cause remained unclear, and there are various accounts of her final journey. The fact is: ice, wind and waves tore the wreck apart; it is only a matter of time before the remains of the wreck have also disappeared. Poor soul….
